PNG is easiest for uploading to SL.......But, to save the logo itself in your own files so you can continue to use it in your ads.....you'll need to save it as a PSD file. That way if you're working in photoshop you can just copy & paste your transparent logo layer on to anything you need.
No matter what size you upload in-world it gets compressed to 512x512. So....it's best to stick with something roughly that size. But....I will also say.....if you have a logo or signage that is long (like my neon looking sign for my shop) you can upload in an aspect ratio that better serves the image......and then when you apply it to a prim....and stretch it....it will look fine in the shape was meant to be. _____________________

In case the question is about the size and aspect ratio of the end-result image shown on About Land, Landmarks, Classified Ads, etc., consult https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Limits. For a professional look, it may be necessary to upload multiple images with multiple aspect ratios to handle all the places where a logo could be appropriate.

no doubt the way to go is a 1024x1024 with alpha.

Naughty Nina.
Texture sizes after uploading are all powers of two, like 512x512, 1024x256, 16x64. You should always adjust your texture to these dimensions before uploading because your graphics program is almost certainly going to do a better job of rescaling the texture than Second Life will. For notice boards, posters, advertising boxes, and the like... an image near the box shape (eg, 256x256 or 512x256) and no more than 256 along the short side (higher resolution makes it take longer before your customers see the image) is best. And no alpha. _____________________

For designing the logo you might consider using a vector based program such as Illustrator, CorelDraw, Inkscape, etc. rather than a bitmap program.
For output as a bitmap for use in SL see the other posts in this thread. _____________________

Oh yes, for designing the image... design it at whatever scale is comfortable. I generally go 2x the final size, at the same aspect ratio as the prim you're putting it on, and then shrink it to 256x256 or so for uploading.

At a glance I don't see anybody having mentioned that uploaded images don't have to be square. Use the magical power-of-two numbers for both dimensions, to be sure, but if the shape of your logo lends itself to something like 256 x 512 then by all means make it like that.
