I'm not the greatest conversationalist in either RL or SL to put it mildly, although I get by. But what makes it even worse for me is the local chat interface.
I've been in world over two years now and still have a lot of trouble conversing. I do okay in the IM window because you can back up with the arrow key as in any normal text processing application.
But try this in the local chat space and all that happens is your camera swings around! The only way to go back and correct gross keying errors (and I'm often so uptight trying to actually have a conversation I make a lot of them) is to delete everything in between with the DELETE key --or stop what you're doing altogether and try to put the cursor in the problem area using the mouse. By this time the conversation has moved on and I am exhausted.
Now I realize I can open the local chat field as a tab in the IM window, or technically the Communicate window I guess, but this leads to confusion as to which tab you should be in.
So my question is, why couldn't the cursor in the local chat field behave like the one the Communication window? Is there an advanced setting I could use for that?
/me considers being a puppy that doesn't speak much in words, like all those in real life.

There's an option at Preferences - Text Chat - Chat Options - Arrow keys always move avatar when chatting. Uncheck that. Does that help?

you can detach the local chat window from the communications window (I keep mine in the lower left corner of my screen, and just close it when I do not have any chat going)
it is the little double arrow thing (where the x buttons is to close a window)
(actually you can detach any chat window from the communications window)

I just tried and both of those suggestions work perfectly. It just goes to show, you can see something everyday but not *see* it.
The detached window thing will also eliminate forgetting to press ENTER before keying and inadvertently jumping into the air when hitting the "E" key.
No one will be able to shut me up at parties now.
