/me waits for the blood to stop dripping from his ears.
Okay, so... let's start with when the problem started: Is this just the way SL has always behaved on this particular machine? Or did it work better on this new notebook and then later started misbehaving? Also, it would help to know a bit more about this configuration; even before logging in, Help / "About Second Life..." generates some useful information. If you could copy and paste the stuff at the top of that window, down through the OpenGL Version line, it would help track down which particular graphics card manufacturer has screwed up your Second Life, or if there's some other reason for the misbehavior. Also, in the meantime, you might check into what graphics card driver updates are available for your machine. The newest may not be the best, depending on chipset, but you'll very likely eventually need to know how to do such an update (sometimes from the card vendor, sometimes from the notebook vendor, for example). _____________________

First I would take off the caps lock key and then try reposting this and include the actual specs on your laptop and graphics card. "Pretty good" is really not very helpful.

OK the rezzing problem is probably due to SL issues which have nothing to do with your laptop.
I have noticed the badly-aligned characters once in a while, as well - will have to pay more attention to when it happens. _____________________

Ohh, a intel graphics processor? Did you try turning all the settings to the lowest you possibly can?
Also, are you running this as a wireless connection? Second Life really doesn't like wireless connections. _____________________

I too suspect the problem is that Intel 965 integrated graphics more than anything else, but there are worse chips (the Intel 945) that will still run SL (kinda).
Try going to the Advanced menu (if you don't have "Advanced" on the Menubar, press Control-Alt-Shift-D; in ancient versions, that menu was called "Debug" , then Rendering / Object-Object Occlusion: try running with that turned off.Under Edit / Preferences, first the General tab: check that the UI Size slider is set to 1.0; if not, try that and see if the font corruption problem gets any better. Oh, and still under Edit / Preferences, the Graphics tab: if the "Run Second Life in a window" box isn't checked, try that to see if it helps. (It could be worth trying to click on the "Custom" settings eventually, just to cut back as far as tolerable on the graphics.) Also, click that Hardware Setting button at the bottom and see what's set there. I'm guessing VBO is already going to be off, but you may want to toggle that, and make sure the Texture Memory is set to no more than the total memory you've allotted to the onboard graphics. (Anybody know this chipset in detail? I'd suppose that is set in the BIOS at boot time, right?) And memory is a big deal, so if this laptop doesn't already have the 2 gigabyte memory configuration, things are likely to be pretty crowded once the integrated graphics gets its piece of the pie. Still don't know the driver version running here... that Help / About Second Life info might speed along getting useful suggestions. _____________________

Also....I've heard many a bad rumor about running ANYthing using Vista.....and I know in the past there have been posts about SL and Vista being a pain in the bum.
It sounds like more than anything...it's the graphics card. Some are just not as capable of running SL at optimum performance. It's especially tricky with a laptop because you can't just go in and update it. Also....tho you may not have had issues in the past with wireless.....it is still a factor because if there's any glitches at all.....using wirelss is only going to make it seem worse because the connection isn't ever quite as smooth as it would be when directly plugged into the modem/router. I'm sure these folks can help you make the best of it with your new laptop......but everywhere I go I hear yucky things about Vista.....so next time you upgrade...ya might want to keep that in mind. ![]() |

I'm stumped. Per Toshiba's support page, that's the most recent graphics driver they have available, despite being over a year old. The machine has 2GB of RAM, so that should be tolerable. It could be network configuration, but the reported packet loss doesn't look bad at all. I suppose it's possible that this really is just as good as SL can run with Intel graphics, and that it's just worse than the previous desktop which may have at least had a real graphics card in it.
If anybody has figured out how to optimize Intel graphics performance for SL, they may have posted something on the Technical Issues subforum (/111/1.html)... I didn't see anything encouraging in a very cursory search. It may be worth trying a third-party viewer. Not sure which one would be better than the others with Intel graphics on Vista. _____________________

Maybe turning off some of Vista's useless eye candy will help.
Go to the Start menu, right click on "Computer", select properties, advanced system settings, the advanced tab, performance settings, visual effects and select "adjust for best performance". Vista won't be as pretty anymore, but it'll probably be a bit faster. _____________________

Graphics Card Vendor: Intel Graphics Card: Intel 965/963 Graphics Media Accelerator Take this from me using my previous experience. IT WILL NOT WORK ! EVER ! EVER! Take the laptop back and buy a new one, before your 21 day return with no questions asked expires. I had a top of the line ThinkPad with an intel graphics card and ATE it because it wouldn't work for SL. Bought a new one! PD DJ at large |
