Trust me, it's only funny the first two times you see it. After that, you'll want to bang on things, too. Preferably some Linden heads...

I hated 2001 with a vengeance, but I quite like LL's take on it... ;) The film always made me fall asleep.

As an aside, 2001: A Space Odyssey was originally filmed with a voice over, to inform viewers exactly what was going on. Stanley Kubrick removed the voice over for whatever reason (bad decision on his part, I think). I'd love to see it with the voice over.

I used to think it was pretty funny too, but it quickly loses it's humor when you eagerly await the grid to come back at said time, 11:00am PST, then read blog after blog entry of...

"We apologize for the inconvenience, but we are extending the scheduled maintenance for an additional 30 minutes. We will provide an update when the process is complete."

Four hours later, the grid comes up and you want to bang on everything in sight.

C'mon, Kubrick is a genius, is like saying "I don't like Beethoven's music because it has no lyrics and I don't know what's going on". There are some things that can't be explained with words.

still, one part of the joke, this self-irony lets me feel, im in good hands: seems not so many employees fallen in love with themself compared to other companies to deal with. or, just came to mind, in the worst case: only some cute monkeys to deal with (in case it shouldnt be meant as joke *lol*) :P *g

Don't be too taken in by the views of some people here about LL. In general, they are pretty fun people doing a not-always fun job.

As I was saying....

We’re now projecting an additional hour of down time, with re-opening scheduled for noon PST. The bulk of the maintenance work has gone as planned. However, one component of the system update has failed validation testing and must be reverted. Once the reversion and validation retesting are complete, we’ll be ready to open logins again.

:) ... thats why that picture doesn't amuse me any further.

Condesencion noted. Yes he is a genius, but not a perfect one. Arthur C. Clarke wrote the "2001: A Space Odyssey" book "from" the movie and the voice-over, and this book explained many things that almost no one could realize directly from the movie.

Yes, I was one of those who said, "WTF?" when seeing the movie, then read the book, along with the original Short Story, "The Sentinel" and then smacked myself on the forehead and said, "Aha" That's what they meant". Yes, Kubrick was a flawed genius, remember "Eyes Wide Shut"? Some voice over explanation would have done "2001" a lot of good. I'm going to take my stress pill now.

Eyes Wide Shut had one of the worst music scores ever. The plinking piano almost caused me to start a riot in the theatre. A truly terrible and boring film. Kubrick's slow, deliberate pace only works when you have a decent script.

Even having a decent script can not be enough to overcome Tom Cruise......

Yes, fine example of screenwriting that was. How could I have forgotten it? Nothing however equals his "work" in "Cocktail"

I have a 'Grid is Down' t-shirt that I had made for me during the dim dark distant days when we had regular Wednesday closures for updates.

Any wanting one can IM me in world and I will pass it to you, for a small donation to the guy who made it. (I don't feel I should give it away for free since he did it as a favour to me)

It has a picture of the monkey waving the big bone on the front and back, and the words "The grid is down... again!" in red written over it.
