I found one person in the technical forum who had successfully used mobile broadband (using mobile ie cellphone 3G connections, not wireless) to connect to SL. This would really suit me while travelling. Is there any experience of this - I'm interested in finding a provider who doesnt cost an arm and a leg, and with reasonable reliability - well as reliable as SL, say.

You don't say what country you're in but I travel all over Europe and I've never had any success with a 3G connection. Also, when out of the UK I'd not use it anyway as it does cost an arm and a leg. Within the UK it would be cheaper than hotel Wi-Fi but I've never had a good connection.

I have used it with a T-Mobile 3G USB modem, but it's not what you'd call incredibly reliable. If you have a good signal and turn your bandwidth a long way down in SL, you can certainly get in and move around and do things, but you will be subject to odd periods of lag. I wouldn't try playing any games.
It did save my bacon recently when the broadband in my new home was delayed for weeks. I was able to build and script and communicate, as long as I was patient occasionally. (Edit: this is in London by the way.) _____________________

Ive used it on vodafone 3g for a number of years, in big cities where there is 3g/3.5g its runs almost as well as on on public wifi.
You do get odd periods of stalling occasionally but it perfectly acceptable for general SL use on relatively standard settings. As to cost - i use the unlimited access package from Vodafone which is about 40gbp per month. Zog |

Was I the one person you saw who had used it?
![]() My only broadband connection is Sprint's EVDO through my mobile phone, and I've been using SL that way since the beginning! ![]() My weak spot is my laptop's graphics, but I haven't experienced any pauses like others have talked about that I know of (or maybe I just accept them without noticing?) However when streaming a movie once, about an hour into it, it borked. Another friend got it in addition to her regular connection, and did feel it was slower (also Sprint) than her normal broadband. Be careful with some of the others, their usage policies prevent online gaming or some such I remember when I was shopping... My local tower isn't the fastest either, ran an online speed meter once that said something like 900 down and I forget how many up (maybe half?) but a neighboring tower had over 1000 down. I don't have my network prefs setting at it's highest for speed in SL, but am happy with how it works, changing connection wouldn't affect me as much as changing my laptop anyway! ![]() _____________________
