prim eyes?

I recently bought some eyes, which I am really pleased with. Along with the normal texture eyes, there are a set of prim eyes, but when I put them in I cannot see any difference at all. I have tried different lighting effects and have checked that they are not buried in my head - i.e. that I really am looking at them, but to me, they look exactly the same as the texture ones.

Does anybody else bother with prim eyes? I suppose they could be useful if I wanted two different colours, but beyond this, I am struggling to see the point of them. What am I missing?

They can be handy with prim heads (some furry etc. avatars), and well, http://www.freakingnews.com/Eye-Mouth-Pictures--1799-0.asp :o

There was a time when eyes were always textured without any rotation. If you tilted your head the eye textures stayed the same. Not a problem for most people and in fact you might never enev notice it. But with cat eyes it was very obvious. With a tilted head the slits were still vertica instead of taking the same angle as the head. Prim eyes were used to fix this problem but it has since been fixed in the viewer.

Just taking a guess but the designer may have added prim eyes for people who wanted to have their eyes follow their head angle during the time of that bug.

Prim eyes are like wearing contact lenses.

Prim eyes can, as mentioned, be different colors, so the eyes mismatch. This is impossible with normal Avatar texture eyes.

Prim eyes can also emit local light or glow, like any other prim. Also impossible with normal Avatar texture eyes.

Prim eyes could also be scripted to change texture, light or glow on command, which can make for some really cool effects!

You do need to very carefully position them so they are on the surface of the avatar eyeball, and using the left and right eye attachment points. If you didn't see a change, they may be embedded in the eyeball.

Depends on what they are set to do. I have some that glow, some that has a fog that comes off of them, some that have beams that come out of them, and even one that will shoot daggers at people... :)

If they are just standard eye textures, then they really don't do more than normal eyes.

None of the above in this case.

Yup, checked for that.

That would make sense as these have highlights and shadows. How long ago was that bug?

Oh well, they're lovely eyes in any case :)

I almost always have a blue left and red right eye. So, prim eyes are a must. (^_^)

Also... I've made some eyes that look like hardware filled hollow eye sockets. 16 prim eyes FTW!!! (^_^)y

The mouth replacing the eyes is far creepier than the eyes replacing the mouth.

That's weird, because when Uchi started making prim eyes for his cats he had a problem with the prim eyes getting locked vertically instead of taking the same angle as the head.

I found the problem in the viewer code myself, and they fixed it pretty quickly. Are you sure you haven't got this backwards?

I was thinking of making transparent eyes that would show the inside of your skull and then making a prim skull inside with clockwork gears ticking away. But it was deemed to much trouble. I have made eye teeth though.

A viewer or two back, I noticed that my eye textures blurred. I would rebake and they would come back to normal, but then they'd always become blurred again. It annoyed me because out of everytthing on my avatar, my eyes didn't look crisp. That's when I found prim eyes. They retained their texturey vivid splendor and it made me happy. It wasn't a drastic change, but it was noticable to me.

All of my settings are maxed, and always have been. I did upgrade my video card a few months ago (Sims 3 blew out my old one) and I've noticed that my eyes don't blur anymore. I have no idea if it's that, a viewer update, or some random craziness, but prim eyes were essential until recently.

(I apologize for any horrible typos, I've proof-read this a few times, but I've also had a few glasses of wine.)

Now I come to think of it, I remember a viewer that, for me, turned everybody's eyes completely black. If that bug rears its head again, I'll be glad I have prim eyes.

I make some for certain lighting effects but there is one constant about LL that is annoying. They keep making changes to reduce resolution (forced) so it is always a fight to reposition everything after any rolling restart or viewer release.

In LL's perfect world the earth is flat and everything in it is a default prim. LL doesn't like complex geometry because it demands triangles they want for windlight. 130,000 triangles on high for windlight and that is top priority and rendered even if you are inside a box and can't see the sky or water.
