Help with Joystick?

I have a Saitek ST90 joystick. I can't even get a twitch out of it in SL. I've looked at any number of things that have come up in google, and I can't find anything that is easy enough to understand to give me any answers, just a vague impression that "joystick support" in SL is limited to one particular device and that you need a degree in computer science to make it work.

What I want to do (and what I expected to happen) is to use the joystick instead of the mouse when in Mouselook.

Could anyone please explain in simple terms whether or not this joystick will work, whether or not it will do what I want it to do, and what I need to do to get SL to take the input?

Thanks.

Someone else posted about trying to use a Gamepad with SL and managed to get it to work. I think you'll need third-party software to "map" commands to certain keys so that it will function as a "mouse" in SL.

Try Googling for key mapping programs that will support your joystick instead and see if that will net you more answers.

Ariel, I think you may be the wrong gender to use the one joystick universally supported by SL . . .

Pep (I could use it even before I got my computer science qualification)

Oh I don't know about that Pep! For one I am of the right gender which of course is female, and I haven't ever received any complaints about my handling of a joystick :p

Oh, I wish I'd seen your answer sooner, Tod. I just got this:

So far so good. Pretty easy to set up, too.

I presume that you have had one on one tuition from an appropriate authority . . .

Pep (And even when it's bad it's still pretty good!)

Well, I have a similar but different problem. Trying to use a Saitek X52, and all I get *is* a twitch. Meaning I move briefly in the direction I push the joystick then stop. And when I release the joystick I move back to where I started. Is there a mapping trick I need to do in the joystick setup? SL sees the stick and throttle, it's just not maintaining the direction after the initial nudge. (And for some reason my missile key = PgUp? What the...?)

The Space navigator I was using previously would move me normally, but kept moving my camera around too. (Too many axis' on one knob). So I figured it's working as a joystick, a regular joystick should work with SL. Not trying to use it as a flycam (Though maybe down the road), my intent is to use it with avatar motion and flying planes in SL. Any thoughts, similar experiences, solutions? I tried the mapping software listed above, but no luck.

Similar to my experience. I now use a Logitech G13 gamepad with thumb joystick, which works fine.

Actually, you need a degree in computer science or be under 16 y.o.
