ok, long story short. I made an alternate account to interact with a a person, who I knew was an alternate account of someone named yoko beaumont.
Next, when I decided to break contact with this person, I made an overblown gesture by IMing them my password, then logging off the new account and ignoring it.
Yoko used the account, but was banned again, and had the account locked for "personal verification", which is mentioned in the ToS, part 2.1. you gotta have valid personal info, or they block your account.
Yoko came to me, because he needed the answer to my secret question to get the account back. I agreed to call customer service and deal with it.
I gave Linden Labs a complete and true list of personal information to negate the 2.1 clause. when I found out a credit card had been used on the account, I had the customer service representative delete all the information about it. while I was originally going to give the account back, several factors including part 2.1, his actions, and suggestions of my friends changed my mind, so I kept it.
Now, this is the sticky part. by giving up the account, it violated part 2.1, and was locked. I took it back, so LL turned it back on. Part 2.3 says what I do with my password is my fault, but I am responsible for anything that happens on any account I make, so all the rude behavior was entirely my fault. Ok, I got that.
lastly, part 2.4 says transfer of accounts without permission of LL is not allowed, so I broke that one. it also says that multiple accounts are at the sole discretion of LL, so I might have broken that one, too.
I guess I am throwing down to find out just what all I did wrong, and get it all worked out.

you named a name in this forum. that was bad.
LL already knows what you did with the account. why stir up more trouble for yourself now? you might get ALL your accounts banned. just drop it.

thats kinda the point, ok? I don't know if I did anything wrong, or what the punishment is, and if I DID, I need to pay for it.
if getting my account locked is part of it, well, damn, I guess I will have to suck that up.
so, back to the operative question. what happens if I give away an account without getting permission?

From: Priest Foxley thats kinda the point, ok? ...... ...... so, back to the operative question. what happens if I give away an account without getting permission? For any violation of the ToS you are subject to some sort of disiplinary actions. That could be a warning, suspension or perminant termination of your account(s)........or nothing at all. It's up to Linden Lab's discretion. From the sound of your post you want to test them.......I would guess that you might expect something other than one of the lesser penalties if that is the case.

so, back to the operative question. what happens if I give away an account without getting permission? It sounds like you already have a good grasp on that. Clause 2.3 and 2.4 of the TOS, as well as the "naming names" rule on this forum. Both were in the TOS you agrees do, so it is assumed that you *should* have known (it's why yer s'posed to read those things, though no one ever does) and that punishment could include account termination, etc.

so, back to the operative question. what happens if I give away an account without getting permission? Why are you asking us? You seem to know everything about the situation that we do. If you want the actual facts of the situation, you'll have to talk to the Lindens. There are no Lindens here; why don't you put in a support ticket and *ask them*?

I'm puzzled by the question why you did that whole setup in the first place. Why the heck did you make an alt and give it away to someone you wanted to break up with anyway? And why was this account locked then? I mean, I have at least two alts who don't have any personal info on file because it was never asked during signup process. Been using them for at least a year without ever being locked out. So I'm guessing he rather got the account locked for an altogether different violation. *scratches head*

What *can* happen is that you could be prosecuted for being complicit to fraud. Person A 'gives' account to person B Person B uses person A's credit card via Second Life account Person A disavows knowledge, states credit card use "wasn't me" At some point, this scenario can't be taken very lightheartedly any more.

From: Desmond Shang [...]Person A 'gives' account to person B Person B uses person A's credit card via Second Life account[...] Or, more in keeping with the storyline here--and much, much worse: Person B associates a stolen credit card with the account, launders some $Lindens, then gets A to take back the account. A few days later, A gets special guided tour of local constabulary.

It is completely within TOS to have multiple accounts (alts). Just about everything else you've mentioned violates TOS, but enforcement is completely at LL's discretion. Unless, as Des and Qie have mentioned, real world laws were violated as well. I might observe that, while Lindens infrequently read the forums, they DO read threads that people call to their attention to using the little triangular button on posts. I can't see why someone would report this thread, but stranger things have happened. This thread gives a bad, fairly visible, precedent of LL tolerating TOS violations if they simply do nothing. Tell you what. I'll delete my post if you remove all the text from yours. You cannot remove your OP, but you can change it. Your best course at this point is shhhhhhh ... and never do it again. <edit>p.s. Oh, and delete the alt account in question.

Let me see if I have this straight... OP: I was an idiot. Here are the idiotic things I did. I know they were stupid, because LL told me so. What do you all think? Everyone: Yes, you were stupid. Does that pretty well sum up this thread?
