I am currently away from home and my SL, but I would like to drop a howdy to some friends who are currently in game. What is the point of letting me see which of my friends are online in SL and not offer me a way to contact them?!
Is there a way I can send an IM from the SL website to a friend in game?
Thanks!

If you allow emails to be forwarded and a friend has sent you an IM from inworld that got forwarded in the last several days, replying to that email should reach them inworld. Works for me.
A friend of mine was going to distribute a system that let's you IM with people in-world when you are out, but it's not ready yet.

Try the email anyway if you haven't, it might work despite the fact that it is supposed to be good only for so long a time. There are at least two web based SL clients, try ajax.net or http://movablelife.net/login.aspxI don't know if Sleek is still working or not. You could try it. Sleek's at http://delta.slinked.net/

if you never responded to the message tru email it will last a substantial amount of time but soon as you do that session starts to die, and you must be able to receive IM <-> to respond to a new message

although it is not (yet) an IM, you can send a message to your online friends as a green message line in chat: http://sl.easy2reach.nl/

Try www.zonkster.com - allows you to send an IM inworld from the web, although you can't get a reply. You do have to go inworld to set it up.

Hey, I have an idea: Post a message is the SL forums and hope your friends see it and know send you an offline message that you can reply to. Hypothetically speaking, of course, your friends may in fact be wondering where the heck you've been and be glad to hear from you.

From: Osgeld Barmy if you never responded to the message tru email it will last a substantial amount of time but soon as you do that session starts to die, and you must be able to receive IM <-> to respond to a new message Actually, it's five days (changed from three a long time ago) from when the message was sent to your email (having nothing to do with if you reply or not). However if they send you another message (replying to your reply) it might get assigned a new address, so the previous one doesn't exist anymore and the five days counts from then on.
