I have a friend who for various reasons wants to start over without losing all her inventory. Any way to change an avatar's name?

No, no way to change names. She can give her new self all transferable items including $L, and that's it. If her old self has non-transferable furniture, she can still use it, just give her old self permissions to modify her new self's objects and leave objects on her property.

The one very minor exception is that they will capitalize the first letter if for some reason you faield to do that when you registered.

I think it should be good advice for true newbies to consider their first account as a trial or demo, for running around testing the climate for a month or three, and determine what they really want out of SL. Only then set up what they consider their primary account and buy the expensive products.

I wish I had had that advice, though I probably would have ignored it. I wasted a good deal of $L (though not so much RL funds when I think about all the fun I've had) buying garbage I didn't really want or need, or buying important stuff for an alt I wish my primary now could have.

Of course now that I have a better idea what I need, purchases never seem to make it to my inventory . . .

Convince LL that the original name is obscene.

Normally, you can't change an avatar name. But there have been some cases of people being required to change their names because somebody objected to the original ones.

Absolutely no way. You can never transfer No Transfer items. Other than that, she only has to create an alt and transfer all her inventory.

If she is being stalked, harassed, or threatened in some way, I think contacting the Lindens could possibly result in a name change. I've heard of it happening, but don't know the details and can't confirm that it actually happened. This probably won't work if your friend hasn't at least tried submitting AR's about the offending person. If there is no such offending person, she's pretty much got to start over with only the transferable items.

And what about your friends list, objects created by your fomer name.

Ha, my name was selected by my daughter(we were setting up an avatar for her( before we realized it was an adult grid) she's had no interest in the game past tweaking the AV's first looks) so guess what name I'm stuck with?

I can't answer for the friends list or group memberships.

Objects created/owned are actually tracked by Key, so if an AV name changes, the name will change in all the obects, as well.
