I am trying to bid on a land auction. I enter my bid amt. I keep getting the following message though, Your bid was not for an acceptable amount. Please bid again.
Is there some special way to enter the bid, i've tried simply 3400, L3400, 3400L, L$3400. None of these seem to work, it is a bid in lindens auction so i'm not sure what i'm doing wrong or if there's an error w/ the auction that is posted.

It may not be high enough.
If someone's top cap is above what you are bidding, you will be outbid. But, don't raise it too high at one go either. It seems to jump according to top cap, but to be honest it's a bit clouded how bid jumps work.

From: Galen Lewsey it just says current bid is 1500L. Next bid should be 1510 Yes, but the page with all the parcels doesn't update in real time. Even the page with the particular parcel may be behind. As Clarissa said, that particular message ("not for an acceptable amount" is generated when your bid is lower than the current high bid. The fact that you may not see what that high bid is is quite aggravating, I agree.

From: Clarissa Lowell to be honest it's a bit clouded how bid jumps work. In my experience it really does go (as advertised) by L10 in the Linden auctions and by US$1 in the dollar ones. The cloudiness comes in with the fact that we don't know what other people's high bids are. But people's only remedy, really, is to bid what the land is worth to them. If someone else gets it, it's because that parcel was worth more to them. *Captain Obvious flies off toward the setting sun, with a jaunty wave*

As long as a bid is in multiples of 10 and is higher than the current highest bid, it should be accepted. If it is the case that someone has a maximum bid that is higher, your bid will be outbid by an automatic bid that is L$10 higher. The bids that we put into the auction system are not taken as the new high bid. They are simply the maximum that we are prepared to spend I've put in, for instance, a maximum bid of L$10,000 but won the auction at L$3,000-ish The way it works is: Current high bid of 1,000 I put in a maximum bid of 10,000 The system automatically bids 1,010 on my behalf and I'm winning Someone puts in a bid of 1,500 The system automatically bids 1,510 on my behalf and I'm winning Someone puts in a bid of 3,000 The system automatically bids 3,010 on my behalf and I'm winning etc. Watching the parcel page and raising your bid as others beat you is probably the road to frustration - particularly in the closing minutes of the auction. The page updates are not instantaneous.

How long does a land auction take? Am I looking in the right place?
09-17-2009 12:16
I would like to bid on a parcel that shows up in purple on the SL map and that has an Auction ID given in the "About Land" information. It has been that way for two days now, but I still have not been able to find it listed in the Second Life Land Auction Block. How long do parcels take to show up in the auction listings? Is there more than one place for SL land auctions? I have tried both the US$ listings and the L$ listings of the Auction Block: looking through all of them, searching by the name of the sim, and searching by Auction ID number. This land is not showing up there at all.
I have also tried searching for information about how long SL land auctions normally take, but have not been able to find that either.

If it has an auction ID then it will (should) hit the auctions within a few days. Just have to keep an eye on the auction page at rollover time. Noon SLT I believe.
I do know that some larger parcels, that usually end up as US$ auctions, can take longer as they tend to run fewer concurrent ones.
Unless you have your heart set on that specific parcel though do a search in world for your parcel size and/or price limit and you'll find a lot that are up for grabs at below the auction starting price/sq m.
Whenever buying mainland be sure to have a darn good look at the actual parcel, don't just go by what you see on the map.
Is it on a SIM edge or in a corner? Does it have real ugly neighbour builds? Extend your max view distance and have a good look around from the lot. Fly slowly up and keep looking around, up and down. If you want to put up a skybox check everything up to around 700m if you want a sea view. Anything over 1,000m will be above the haze.
It's a buyers market. Check out a lot of parcels, create landmarks for ones you like the look of, make a short list and then check them out again.

Thanks Rime - all good considerations.
In fact the land did show up in the auction listings exactly one week after it had appeared in purple on the SL map. I bid on the land, and my bid won, so I now have it.
