Ever since I upgraded to the 1.22 viewer, I haven't seen any login-screen, just a 'black hole'... Any idea what might have caused that?

Not sure about the 'cause' of it....but it happens sometimes and it shouldn't affect your ability to log in....just no pretty picture. Probably someone else has got a better explanation.....but it's happened to me a few times.

It happens to everyone. You must clear your WEB CACHE (so that's not the regular clear cache option) and then restart. It's somewhere in the Preferences.

fun thing, if you enable grid selection (ctrl+shift+g at the logon screen) and select_ any item from the menu, the login background will request a new random image for the background.

PS agni is the main grid, aditi is the test grid, and the others are mostly not open.

Thanks, but....still a problem

Thank you all, but I get the black background (rather than the log-in background) *every* time I start-up SL - and therefore, I cannot see any messages from LL either, which is probably the most serious effect of it.
I have tried to clear both of the caches (many times) but still without any luck.

Hmmm. Does the embedded browser work, once you get in-world? I'm thinking about whether somehow http transport is blocked for this application by a firewall or something... although... that seems pretty unlikely. Very odd.

By the way, LL still isn't pushing any announcements onto the splash screen. That's been b0rked for ages.

Thanks for the suggestion, although... yes, the embedded browser does work. Sounds like an odd matter, indeed. I had been thinking of upgrading to the 1.23 viewer, but would rather avoid that as long as possible (i.e. until LL make it mandatory), due to the side-effects that have emerged in that version.
