Hi all,
Was wondering if there was any benefit to having a store located at ground level versus 500 meters up in the sky. Is there less lag up there? Is there more potential traffic on the ground? What are your thoughts?
Thanks!

I usually do find a bit less lag up in the sky. I don't think you'll really miss any 'wandering by' traffic. A lot of it depends on what is around you now - if the sky is already crowded or cluttered, it could be worse than down lower.

My shop was in the sky for a long time, and I don't think it ever suffered for lack of traffic wondering by. You can set the landing point at any height when you list it in search, and if the sky isn't cluttered you will probably enjoy less lag and a nicer view.
Plus, if you put nothing but a few trees or a little park on the ground below, rather than a busy shop, your neighbors will love you. ![]() _____________________

If locating a store in the sky, is there a general rule to how high it should/can be? Is there a height limit that one should not go over?

If locating a store in the sky, is there a general rule to how high it should/can be? Is there a height limit that one should not go over? There is an LSL function, llMapDestination, that still doesn't work correctly with destinations over 1000m. People using personal teleporter sorts of devices may have trouble getting to your store if you don't put some kind of landing platform lower than that to catch them (you could provide an elevator/teleporter device to get them upstairs). The fix for that will be on the viewer side, and since people can be slow to upgrade you can expect this issue to last for a while even after it's fixed. If you allow rezzing, there may still be a few die hards who can't really edit stuff over 768 meters, but at this point those are going to be do-it-yourself types who can cope with the consequences. |

There is lower lag at higher altitudes because there are fewer textures for your client to render. At least I think that's why lag is less.
If your landing point is above 768m, you won't be able to post an event to the Events calendar. You will get a message that says "Invalid Z-Coordinate." I discovered this after having built a club at 950m. Please vote on this to be fixed at: http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/WEB-814 |

Errors in prim alignment get worse the higher you go. If you experience texture flicker or seams that you didn't at lower altitude, that's why. For builds that rely on good alignment 1500 may be the highest useful altitude, and 1000 is better.

Hello Chicote,
I'm still newish to this, but find a shop at 250m works well..definately less lag...customers can tp straight in from search...in some ways its more attractive, having less visual clutter...and anyone passing by can tp up from the ground if they like (try a teleporter down there with hovertext or sign, if you are worried about missing out). It leaves the ground free for gardening, always a plus on the mainland. It's heartening to hear it works for others, too ![]() |

i really prefer to have my shop in the sky, but i currently own waterfront land and do not want to give up the SL water. it's pretty.
for non-lag purposes, go sky if you can. _____________________
