How would I communicate with my in-world friends if I were not signed in ?

Anyone know?

AjaxLife or SLeek or small programs like that, I think, are what you want, although you still sign in, just with a stripped-down client.

I don't have any firsthand experience - someone will be along, I'm sure, who knows much more.

zonkster.com, but it's only one way, into SL not out, and you have to register inworld before you can use it. Replies will go to your email if you have IMs set to do that.

SLim is in beta. http://secondlife.com/SLim/
The major drawback is that you are limited to those that use the slim client and they have to be on your friends list.

If they IM you and you have IM->Email enabled, you can also reply to their emails. Make sure you don't forward the original message back, though.

Think LL said you can reply to an email up to 5 days later.

That's why I didn't mention it - those caveats reduce its usefulness greatly.
