Salon opines about the recent spate of articles worrying that terrorists may be using Second Life that started with the knee slapper in The Australian last year: http://www.salon.com/opinion/feature/2008/02/25/avatars/index.htmlIn case you missed them the first time around... Here's the stupidity that started it all: http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,25197,22161037-28737,00.htmland here's Mitch Wagner's hilarious rebuttal from Information Week: http://www.informationweek.com/blog/main/archives/2007/07/terrorism_in_se.html

Well, we have pretty much run out of other ZOMGWTFBBQ!!111 drama for journalists to go into a tizzy over. It was only a matter of time before terrorism cropped up on the Wheel of SL Misinformation.
To think, we used to beg for people to write about something other than the "adult" content of SL.

hehe, when I saw the Salon headline I thought "oh god, not another one!" Fortunately instead it's about how ridiculous the other articles on this subject have been. The Australian article was written last July but keeps getting rehashed by others.

HEY MAN!! I was there when the attack happenend!!! Johnny.... he was ahead of me.... I got stuck becuz of lag & left behind.... he... he... caught a flying penis in the face.....*sob*.... never saw it coming!! *sob* All of this falls in with the bit that the 9/11 Terrorists used PC Game Flight Simulators to learn to fly airplanes. Mostly, it just makes me laugh.... ALOT. I rank these stories along with anything with Jack Thompson (look him up!) The sad truth is, most media-gullible people will buy into this. THAT is the sadest thing of all. We've lost our ability to think for ourselves & believe anything in print or on TV no matter how ridiculous it sounds.

From: Chip Midnight ...and here's Mitch Wagner's hilarious rebuttal from Information Week... Good to see a bit of common sense, laced with humour, in what normally passes as "journalism" regarding SL

I think that LL should take a leaf out the US Government's book in order to keep the terrorists out.
There's a question on the Visa application forms: "Do you seek to enter the United States to engage in export control violations, subversive or terrorist activities, or any other unlawful purpose? Are you a member or representative of a terrorist organization as currently designated by the U.S. Secretary of State? Have you ever participated in persecutions directed by the Nazi government of Germany; or have you ever participated in genocide?"
See? If the answer is yes, then the application (presumably) gets refused.
LL could adapt and tighten up on the procedure by not only asking the above question, but also by asking the applicant to supply some RL details of someone who is not a terrorist.
I actually suggested this to Osamabin Linden at his last office hours session.

Yeah well we saw how many fell for the photochopped 9-11 videos on utube, CIA must have snuck into my Australian house and edited all my VHS tapes of the news as it happened to be different...............................

It's a very cunning approach - ask an obvious question and provoke unwitting honesty. Are you here for terrorism? Ah, damn, you got me bang to rights. Thought I was going to get away with that for a minute there. Handy advice for travellers to the United States. When asked at immigration whether your visit is for business or pleasure, never, under any circumstances, say "both, hopefully" in a jokey, I've-been-on-a-plane-for-eight-hours sort of way. The big guy behind the desk will not appreciate it in the slightest, nor will the huge queue of people behind you that will invariably form while you are being grilled for 20 minutes. You'd be better off confessing to moral turpitude. Far quicker.

Quoted in Mitch's article: "Sorry, this terrorist attack can not be completed at this time as the grid is down for scheduled maintenance. Please consider rescheduling your attack on our freedom at a later date". Class

My personal theory on why Osama's not been sighted in the past 11 mos. is because he's been leveling his Troll Rogue to 70 since BC came out, and now he's just too involved in the Season 3 2v2 arenas and frequent forays into Kara

*ponders* First, terrorists practicing in SL to do RL stuff is going to find it might hard to crash RL sims. Also, they're going to have to learn to time bombs differently for RL.. I mean, you can't just teleport away!
If one simply assumes that the point of terrorism is to create.. well, terror, then I think it would be safe to assume that the two biggest terrorists in the world are the media and the government at this point. What other groups are so big on making us live in constant fear for our lives?

He's been stuck at 39 for months. Easy to find him, though -- just look by Nesingwary's camp for the corpse of "Death2America" and the 70 Gnome mage named "Bushroxx" that's camping him. P2

That being the case, the asset server is clearly the most dangerous and prolific terrorist in SL

Another thing to consider when training terrorists in SL... those weapons of mass destruction you're stock piling will disappear when you need them.. and reappear when you don't!

Bushroxx is actually on Death2America's side. Who do you think leveled him to 38?
