Hi guys,

I've been looking around and visited several properties but I wondered if any of you could give me some suggestions.

The thing is, there are many places to rent but I don't just want to rent a place. I'm also looking to become part of a community and make friends, find people to hang out with, have a place to belong. My rezday was in Dec 2007 so I'm still fairly new and I feel rootless... like no place to go, no place to call home, y'know?

A lot of places to rent are just that -- places to rent, impersonal, you TP in and out, you won't see your neighbours and they won't see you. That's not what I want.

I'm single and don't need a really large place (eg. two-storey house), don't need a high prim count either. Budget is not more than $200L a week. Any suggestions would be welcome :)

H Quaintly - welcome to SL and the forums!

This is not a shameless plug for one of the 'villages' my partner and I own, but just to point you in the right direction.

There's no real rocket science to it, firstly think out where you'd like to live - there's snowlands, beachland, islands - you name it, it's out there to live on! Then just look in land and property search for 'community' or 'village' and that should bring up a choice of places that you can visit.

Take time at each place you visit to check you like the feel of the area and notice how many people come and go while you are there.

Other than that, to meet knew people just check out places to visit from zoo's to clubs, depending on what you like, to meet like minded people and so long you don't cling on to someone like a rash on your first meeting and you'll find it's not too difficult to make new friends!

Most of all, all I can really say is to relax and enjoy whatever it is you see and do here! :)

All the best.
Kaia.

$200/wk is a pretty tight budget.

Dang, that is a generous prim budget and a low rent. I can't offer anything near that and still stay in business.

My advice: Don't move!

Let's see wether I can do maths...

180 prims at 225 a week.

15000/180=83,333 condos. Paying alltogether 18750 a week.

18750*52 / 12 = 81250 linden/month.

81250/266 = US$ 305,45

So if each and every condo is filled up, 305 dollars are made. Meaning that a class 5 sim would make 10 dollar a month, a class 4 or mainland sim 110 dollar. If every condo is filled that is.

I would advise not to move indeed :D But also keep checking the prims used on the sim itself ;)

Greetings Marcel

Well, I rent quite a nice-sized cottage with 300 prims for 575 per week. The landscape surrounding the rentals is amazingly landscaped, really beautiful, and I have a lake right in front of me. Haven't really seen much of the neighbours though....that would make it so much nicer. Anyway, the place is owned by Ivy Darrow and she's really nice and helpful.

Pocket,

Putting those figures in the calculation above, you get a much more realistic figure (US$ 468,35).

I pay 2 linden a sqm a month. Meaning a sim would bring in 131072 linden = US$ 492,75. Of which 295 goes to LL, leaving my landlord with 197,75 a month. IF all parcels are rented out, which is not very likely at any given moment in time. Each parcel for rent will have to be substracted from that figure. And then comes advertising costs, paying estate managers, and do not forget: earning back the sim. Which means that anyone renting out land for less, is likely to get into problems sooner or later in my opinion ;)

Greetings, Marcel

Hello and Welcome Quaintly!

The estates that I live on are beautiful and the owners are so friendly and so are the neighbors. I'm not sure it would be what you are looking for as you purchase a parcel and put your own home on it, but it's a great group. The group has get togethers every once in awhile, there are common areas as well that you can hang out on and meet people if you choose. Everyone is super friendly and respectful. You are more than welcome to come take a look though if you want, just shoot me an IM and I would be more than happy to show you around. They might be able to divide a parcel for you if they can as there are a couple more sims coming up, to help with price.

Can I venture to offer you an alternative?

You don't have to rent or own a place to become part of a community. That is one of the beauties of SL, as far as I am concerned. Travel a bit, find the places where the people you like to interact with hang out, and then quite simply hang out there. You will very simply become a part of that community, without any financial obligation.

Being a nomad in SL is a very viable option - I have been one since my rezday, and I very much feel a part of two communities.

And that means you can spend your budget on more worthwhile things ;)

I had the same problem before. I actually rented in an area that all homes were populated/rented out but they were never to be seen or heard nor were there any kind of businesses/recreation around. Kind of sucked because I wanted to be in an area where there was at least some kind of interaction.

My 2nd apartment was actually on an island that I frequented everyday. It has a club, lounge, castle, businesses, skating rink. I knew everyone there so it made me feel even more at home.

Right now I live in a skybox with my sl boyfriend but it's still a new development so no one is around except for us but we hope to spread the word of the new homes and get the place populated.

I would say find an area that you feel as though you would always be around in the most. Chat up with the locals, see if there's any hot spots around and check out nearby homes. It may take a while to find your fit but it will happen eventually.

Kalderi has given great advice. Find a community/hangout you enjoy being a part of first and ask your new found community and friends where they enjoy living if you still want to rent.

While I'm sure that there are many socially active communites around, finding one in your price range might be tough.
And what if your neighbors aren't very nice? Seems to me it's better to find a place with a nice interior to hang out with your friends, than to worry about who's outside.

We have a house among many in one of Cristalle's rental areas. I'm never outside and, according to my minimap, there are rarely more than one or two other people within range. And chances are they are home because they want to be private. With so much to do in SL, why stay home?

I prefer having a home over being a nomad only because it gives you an undisturbed place, where you can play your own music and decorate to your liking. The location, to me, is irrellevant.

Thanks for the replies and suggestions, everyone! I've found an awesome place that is within my budget and has a great landlord :) He IM'd me in-world about it and I loved the cottage, the price was right, so... viola!

Yes, it's tight because I'm new and I don't know yet whether I want to pour RL cash into SL. Since my av doesn't have a job and I can't build anything worth selling (lol), I don't want to spend too much until I'm sure that I'll be staying in SL for the long term.

Kalderi - well, it's nice to have a place to go back to where I can rez stuff and change :) Apart from that... well, if you're a nomad with a purpose that would work. So far the only thing I've been doing on SL is shop for my av, lol. But I did make friends with some other shoppers who always hit the same stores!

I don't have any idea where to go, you see...

The reality is that in an international environment, you are not going to find a lot of people on at the same time. Brann has about 60 neighbors in her sim right now, with a maximum of 71. But rarely will you see more than 10 or so people in the sim at any given time. People are playing at different times. I have people that show up to rent apartments at all hours of the day.

You are lucky to find more than a handful of people in any sim at any given time, unless they are constantly having events. Even people who are playing and have homes are out and about doing things. If you want to live in a high traffic area where there are a lot of people, you need to live near a club. But clubs come and go so often, it's not guaranteed to stick around unless the usual mall add-on is successful.

Not exactly note that if you you want a nice landscape it also uses lot of prims (common areas, roads, trees, streetligths etc).
