CSI New York apparently requires OnRes Software
In what way is it better than vs not as good as the regular Second Life software
Are there olaces you can go in one you cant go in the other?
When I joined it was through CSINY, and when I come on with SL software it says my home is not available and it puts me somewhere near
The displays (HUD) for the two are different, but you can do the same things, just My Stuff vs Inventory, etc

The Display is usually known as the User Interface (UI) and contains the menu bar, the Communication, Search, Inventory, and other windows. A HUD is something that you wear as an attachment and shows up on your screen in addition to the UI and adds functionality to your avatar.

CSI doesn't require the onrez viewer to participate with csi, using the SL viewer, just go to any of the csi sims and get the hud attachment

The HUD is the menu bar etc, and any of the things you attach to it attach to the HUD (Heads-Up Display by the way). HUD and UI are the same thing.

From: Conan Godwin Actually HUD is an abbreviation of "HUD Attachment". The HUD is the menu bar etc, and any of the things you attach to it attach to the HUD (Heads-Up Display by the way). HUD and UI are the same thing. Typically when we say HUD in SL we are referring to an object attached to one of the 8 HUD Attach points (32 -> 39 i think). In most games a HUD is a part of the UI that is task specific to showing information about game play progress. HUDs typically have some interactive aspect to them that has effects on the game such as inventory manipulation. The SL client does have what it purports to be HUD built into the client, it is a set of debugging features found under the Client debug menu. A HUD is an interface immersed in the game, it is intended to be part of the game play or experience. With a complex system a major design goal of the UI is to have to be easy to use; the only experience the user should take away should be a good experience. The UI should not be a hindrance to the underlying data and manipulations, the experience should be transparent. The HUD and UI design goals do not always go hand in hand, the UI is designed to allow the user to do what they want, the HUD is designed to allow the user to do what the programmer allows. For example cheat consoles are typically not found or accessed by the HUD but through some other aspect of the interface.

Without getting into a contest of whether it is better to call it a UI or a HUD or a Display or a gobblygook, or whatever else, what are the relative advantages of OnRez and the SL Software?
At the top of OnRez is Me Edit View Here Help with double left, left arrow with dropdown, Home Location Search MyStuff Shop and Buy with the bottom having Chat Gesture Talk Nearby a symbol like a washer with external teeth speaker IM History Friends
At the to of SL is File Edit View World Tools Help location and time, and the bottom has communicate chat fly snapshot search build minimap map inventory
Clearly MyStuff is Inventory, and whether at top or bottom does not much matter. Everything is available (I think), if not by one name then by another
Why have both? Are there things one can do the other cant?
You may be able to do CISNY with SL, but there is a billboard urging you to d/l OnRez Client

That's because they want you to go shopping at OnRez.

I prefer to use the SL client, do not need my password handed out to someone else

From: DJ Earnshaw when I come on with SL software it says my home is not available and it puts me somewhere near Does it still do this? Likely what happened is your home wasn't available at that time, but if you try it now it'll likely work. This just happens sometimes. When it can't put you in your home sim it puts you someplace else.
