Sailing in SL

Yes, I did do a search before posting this topic, and found either A) threads about banlines killing casual sailing, or B) advertisements for beachfront and island sims.

What I'm asking is simple: are there many areas where an enterprising nautical type might sail a ship, unhindered, for a considerable distance, without colliding into boundry lines and sim border issues? I am cognizant of the Sanchon Sailing Center, it is a fine place for the naval fighting I enjoy, but it IS cramped. I was hoping for a few "void sims" worth of water to practice sailing on. I have been to Adriatic, where the yacht racing occurs, but there is a LOVELY long stretch of water there, but, alas, whomever is in charge will not let a casual yachtsman plunk down a great big brigantine and practice coming about. (point of information: I recently purchased the Speculaas brig, blockade runner, and red dragon ships and use the Speculaas system).

So.. are there any other loooong stretches of water about in SL? Where are they? Can I sail on them? I greatly appreciate your assistance.

Try the southern edge of the south continent. There are several all water sims still under Governor Linden.

Rosedale is a void sim near Abbott's Aerodrome, it's good for sailing; you just have to rez the ship around Abbott's, because Rosedale is no build. There's also a fair amount of water east (I think) of the forest in Rodeo. I believe there are also new water void sims north of the city sims, but I haven't been there yet, so I can't say for sure.

Ban lines are horrendous for any type of vehicle. Its really a nuisance. I fly my hot air balloon above the ban lines though and I have a nice smooth ride, I can go up and down all the continents no problem over 160meters

I don't remember the name of the sim at the moment, but it's the first sim north of ANWR. You can rez stuff there (or you could last time I was there) and you have basicaly unimpeded open water for about 4 sims in a row. I rode a jetski up and down for about 45 minutes before getting bored. The area is 1 sim wide and at least 4 sims high, between the two continents. Great boating fun, with the prim drilling rig in the middle of ANWR for interest. There's also a ferry boat that you can race or play chicken with :-)

I appreciate all your fine suggestions and will seek them out next time I am inworld.

My recent sailing experience is chronicled here: http://hiberniaskids.blogspot.com/2007/04/down-to-sea.html

Also check out the huge lake to the east on the mainland, almost 20 void sims. There is a Linden island in the middle, Baffin I believe, that allows rezzing with a 5 minute auto return set.

On the other hand, sim border crossings are always an issue if done at speed, best to slow when crossing those.

Try Aich :)

There is a sim called Aich, open, Linden water. And you can rezz your boat at the pier at Max's Landfall in neighboring Papa. :)

I live in Mocis, and have sailed many times, going north all the way to Snout. From Mocis, I stay all the way east, on protected linden parcels for 3 sims, then I hit open sea at Feltia. It is 3 ocean sims north and 3 ocean sims west to next challange or hugging eastern protected linden parcels from Lasiocampa to Galiata (a total of 3 sims), then, more ocean. This is Blush, which is good area to sail. From there, I have gone all the way to Eggar where I bought boat from Trudeau. Of that trip, when finished, I put boat back in inventory and teleport home!

I do not allow anyone to rez objects on my parcel and the protected linden parcel on ocean also has it turned off. But, next door in Zale sim, owner allows it.

The trip I mentioned above is fun and 90% of time there are no problems crossing sim borders.

Do a sim search for Hollywood and Nantucket.

Huge sailing communities which are very much alive and kicking... regular fun races, regettas, sailing classes... the whole nine yards. ;)

Come to the 43 sims that comprise the United Sailing Sims of Second Life. Start at the USS-SL HQ in the Hollywood Sim.

I bought land in the sim Agrippa for this reason. There are around 16 void ocean sims to the south of it, and it is one of the largest mainland water areas.

Do the sailing boats in SL use the SL "wind" to dictate the behavior of the sailboats? In other words, when you sail in SL do the boats behave like a real sailboat? Or is it more like you just go wherever you point the boat, regardless of what the SL "wind" is doing?

The only sailboat I've tried was a freebie from Yadni's and it basicaly just ignored the wind and went wherever you pointed it (more or less) but since there's an llWind() function, I'd think it's possible to make a boat that worked relatively realisticly.

Yes some boats do depend on the wind. There's a free flying tako sailboat somewhere north of Plum and it moves under wind power. I'm sure there are many others.

Funny thing about wind. A wee little history:

Beginning - The first sailboats operated exactly as powerboats, even though they looked like sailboats.

Spring 2004 - Ale Bukowski releases the Privateer, a wooden sailboat which reads the strength of SL wind to determine it's speed. The boat would maintain this speed regardless of wind direction. I'm not sure if wind reading was part of the original release or added later, but it was in when I bought the Privateer in early 2005.

Summer 2005 - Kanker Greenachre releases the Flying Tako, a monosail dingie which not only reads wind strength but wind angle. This included behavior like reaching and stopping in irons. The Tako was later updated for centerboard toggling behavior and a movable spinnaker, in addition to more realistic behavior overall.

All sailboats which operate at or beyond the level of the Tako are derived from the Tako's sailing mechanics, including yawls, cutters, catamarans and sloops. Essentially, the era of sailboats driving around like cars is over.

Hi I'm looking for a jetski that will survive border crossings and has sound. Any hints and tips? I tried some cheap ones and they suck. Thanks.
