They say that things come in threes and the third one arrived, so I should be in the clear for a while. I'll explain First, last Wednesday I discovered that someone had tried to break into my car by punching a hole in the door with a screwdriver, trying unsucessfully to pop the lock out. The car is brand new, with only 130 miles on the clock and someone willfully punched a hole in it! Then the next day (Thursday) my main computer simply died. It turns out that the hard drive is dead. That's the second thing, and I was waiting for the third to come along. It arrived on Sunday when my brand new HD box (couple of weeks old) popped (the sound) and died. So now I should be in the clear for a while The computer was from PC World and I have a maintenance contract with them so, although it was just over a year old and out of its guarantee, I'm covered. But they came up with the most stupid thing I've ever come across. When I was reporting it on the phone, the girl, who was only following instructions, wanted to test to see if the hard drive was faulty (I didn't know what the fault was at that time). She wanted to talk me through wiping the drive, and if it wiped ok, then it wasn't faulty! How stupid can they be??? That's the script they've given her - wipe the client's data from the hard drive, and if it gets wiped then the fault must be somewhere else.

Is it possible that the phone number you were given to call was actually spoofed, by a research firm doing a study on "The Use of Profanity, Insults and Invective"...???

I hadn't thought of that possibility, but you might be right. Only partly though because, as a result of that phonecall, the engineeer turned up today

By the way: what an awful week! It's a tribute to your resilience that you're able to be here posting about it; if all that happened to me in so short a period of time, I suspect I'd be curled up on the floor, sobbing...

Everything is covered - even my no claims bonus is protected. So everything will get sorted out soon enough. The HD box was replaced today, I have other computers I can use until a new hard drive arrives, and the car is still in use and will get a new door before long, so all is relatively well

I've learned that smiling and laughter helps when going through really dark times. And a bit of SL escapism doesn't hurt either.

SOP: Restore from image to factory default. The machine is warranted to operate only as delivered. The moment you put anything else on the machine you void the warranty and they can tell you to take a leap, keep the money, and have one less support client to deal with.

Glad if your run of bad luck is ended, though.

Around my place, those "threes" often happen weekly.

Are you sure you called PC World support and not Linden Lab?

From: Joshooah Lovenkraft Are you sure you called PC World support and not Linden Lab? I'm pretty sure. For the most part they seem indistiguishable but the fact that the engineer arrived on the stated day, and in the stated time period on that day, indicates that he didn't come from LL. Also, the thing is being dealt with much more quickly than I'd expect from LL

i'd need a straightjacket after all that in just a few days.... and yeah, pretty strange they'd ask you to wipe your HD to find out if your HD is the problem. of all, the hole in the window of a brand new car is disheartening. and, you know they'll be back, right? be careful! you have a great sense of humor. but then, what else can you do, right?

From: Conifer Dada It's a good job you weren't ringing up about the airbags in your car!!! hehe - yeah - make them inflate, stick holes in them with a knife and, if the air escapes, then they were working ok so let's find the fault elsewhere 3Ring. It wasn't the window that acquired a hole in it - it was the metal door itself - by the lock, attempting to pop the lock out. I don't think it'll be repeated though. I had my bowling bag in plain sight inside the car at the time, and it must have looked like a bag bursting with who knows what goodies, and not a couple of bowling balls.

Phil, It's good that you are still smiling after these things. After all, we must keep things in perspective. I live in Douglas County, GA. A couple of weeks ago, we got 20 inches of rain in 24 hours. We had massive flooding. Roads were washed out, and bridges were completely washed away. Hundreds of homes were completely flooded, and thousands sustained severe water damage. Seven people lost their lives. We are still trying to dig out of the mess. All in all, I would have preferred to have a crashed hard drive. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PB3MlzJgrD0&feature=relatedKeep smiling

When the fan on my laptop went out, I was told that is the first thing they would do if I sent it in for the warranty repair. Since it was my work computer it wasn't exactly what I needed. I wonder if one could fib and say yes I already did that, still doesn't work.

Mine are only small things and easily fixed but yours takes time - and heartbreak for some. My post was about the idea that things come in threes rather than how bad it's been for me, because it hasn't been bad at all. We talk about things coming in threes but I was quite surprised when the third one showed up. PLUS, I really did want to write about that sheer stupidity of PC World, and it gave me an excuse to write it
