http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/7985339.stmFrom: someone Details of user e-mails, website visits and net phone calls will be stored by internet service providers (ISPs) from Monday under an EU directive.
The plans were drawn up in the wake of the London bombings in 2005.
ISPs and telecoms firms have resisted the proposals while some countries in the EU are contesting the directive.
Jim Killock, executive director of the Open Rights Group, said it was a "crazy directive" with potentially dangerous repercussions for citizens.
All ISPs in the European Union will have to store the records for a year. An EU directive which requires telecoms firms to hold on to telephone records for 12 months is already in force. At present its not data collection as such but knowing how paranoid agencies are getting is this the next Aristotle in the making as the mechanisms will be in place to collect eventually a lot more as governments see fit. Should we don our Tin Foil hats now lol

ISPs (and a lot of companies) in the US have been storing emails for many many years - and they are subject to court subpoena.
And while actual phone conversations are not stored here (via regular phone lines), the numbers called and received have also been stored for a long time and subject to court subpoena.

Yep i was aware of that but just put it down to the usual USA Government paranoia about its citizens and its assumed world police role and that is why it does it and no disrespect is meant there Just the way a lot of the world views the USA nowadays and yes i have some great friends there and NO i am not USA bashing, i think the UK sucks as well thats why i left

I could almost understand this, if I didn't walk past several open or WEP wi-fi access points on my way to buy a sandwich..

It's times like this that I wish I owned shares in Seagate or Maxtor. I mean the size of the disk farms these government agencies must be setting up sound like they'd swallow up the entire output of whole factories!

...because no terrorist knows how to use public key encryption, or not to just put "hey lets go bomb such and such place".... ::facepalm::
(ok maybe some are that stupid, but these are the one they usually catch beforehand, because they got drunk at the bar and were telling the off duty police officer all about it)

I'd get out of this here United Socialist States of Amurrica, if I could find somewhere the busies will leave me the hell alone, the government isn't likely to be overthrown next week, and half the population isn't starving or diseased. Anyone see this one? The spending the Obama government has ALREADY approved amounts to 90% of the US Gross Domestic Product. Yep, the Government now owns not just GM and the banks, but everything.

Im in Holland now with no intention of going back to the UK Yeah things are tough here just as in most places but speaking with friends back in the UK i am certainly better off in many ways. I will be honest I haven't been following the USA closely i just know its not as good as it should be, bloody politicians always wanna line there own pockets first

Glad to see I am not the only one alarmed at the way the govt. has slowly usurped freedoms and begun to buy up private entities and banks. (Airlines are next.) And I grew up being told RUSSIA was bad. It listened in on its citizens. They were tracked, spied on, their movements limited, they could be searched randomly. Hello 2009 - hello irony. To LS: It isn't national, it's global. The same few control it all. I'd say a lot more but... (search out Aaron Russo's video interviews)
