I see a desktop model called a pavilion v600 but there's also a laptop called the pavilion dv6000. So which one do you have? Desktops are considerably easier to upgrade but there may be a few things you can do with a laptop.

I have a laptop and I'm hoping to spend no more than $120.

Max up your RAM, thats the easiest, laptops can't really use new video cards, it's rare, they are almost always integrated. But look up your model, there's no need to add more RAM then you can handle.

I agree - RAM is pretty inexpensive, compared to other upgrades, and there isn't much that you can do to a laptop inexpensively. Desktops are much easier to upgrade, but even with a desktop, $120.00 won't go very far.

It looks like the dv6000 can go from 512mb to 1gb ram which is around $22. I don't see anything else you can upgrade on it.

Most laptops have 2 RAM chips. So 512M is actaully two 256M chips. You will most likely have to replace both RAM chips to get to the 1G RAM. In other words, you will need two 512M chips.

From: HP Memory Finder

Here are your memory upgrade options
Manufacturer HP - Compaq
Model Pavilion dv6000 Series
Maximum Memory 2048MB
Standard Memory 512 or 1024MB removable
Number of Slots 2 (2 banks of 1)
Notes -

Look and see what is physically installed. If you're lucky one slot has a 1GB in it and you can just buy one that matches. Unlikely but might as well check. If not then I would recommend just getting a 2GB kit.
