I'm searching up and down and not finding anything worthwhile.

At this point, I'm really not even preferential on the genre.

In world searches give me three types of sims. Gor sims, laggy sims, or sims where I have to join three groups and fill out fifteen application forms. I just wanna RP, not fill out an application and get stuck on a waiting list somewhere, waiting for some "moderator" (i.e. Snotty kid on a power trip) to "approve" me.

Karamoon.

Might not want to take the attitude in about mods, though. All roleplay sims have them. AKA the people who pay the bills.

That does not change the fact that many of them seem like snotty kids on power trips...

Presumably there are good, reasonable ones out there, but a lot of the RP sims seem very pretentious.

I haven't tried that many. Most of the snottiness in my experience came from players who wanted to set the rules of the sim, rather than the owner or admin of same. Most of the latter seemed to just want people to be there.

But it wouldn't shock me if there are some places where the owner's on a control trip.

I didn't say all mods are terrible. Just the snotty kids on power trips.

Either way, thanks for the replies. I'll have a look.

No prob. Wasn't trying to say that you did. Just said not to carry that preconception in with you.

Well you did SORT of say that, in saying you could only find rp sims like that. But ok.

You're welcome, and good luck.

I role-play in Sim which is based on JRR Tolkien's "The Silmarillion". Our application asks questions regarding your knowledge of Tolkien's works and specifically knowledge of the First Age of Middle Earth in which the Sim is set.

Also, we ask you about your character and how he/she might fit into the storyline.

If you just want to wave a sword around and kill monsters, that's fine. But it's not role-playing. (I'm not saying you do by the way.) If you understand the nature of role-playing then surely you can understand the reasons for asking questions such as the above in an application form.

I also play a vain rainbow colored dragon that is always trying to eat the Queen's peacocks. This is decidedly un-Tolkien and just for fun. So our role-play isn't always strictly enforced either. ;)

I recommend Ravenhurst for good roleplaying. They have recently switched setting from medieval to modern, and it's somewhat based on World of Darkness but still mainly freeform.

Sadly, I too have met a lot of 'snotty kids on power trips' as GMs, but I only have good experiences from those in Ravenhurst. They are very reasonable and listen to the players, there aren't tons of notecards and rules you have to read to join, and no need to fill in any applications unless you wanna join any particular faction. And joining factions isn't necessary at all to play. Just take a look at the rather short list of rules and jump right into the RP basically ^^

As written your question is very difficult to answer. What flavor of roleplaying are you looking for? Do you want to be involved with the world of Pern, or vampires, or Star Wars, or Star Trek, or Tolkien, or Babylon 5, or Dungeons And Dragons, or roleplaying a business owner, or what? There are a very large number of types of roleplay out there, and if the roles being played out at a given sim aren't your cup of tea, telling you that it's a good roleplaying sim is not going to do you a bit of good.
