An AO is an Animation Override, and does just that. It allows you to add animations (Walk, sit, stand, etc) to use in place of the crappy default ones.

From: Shalisha Charlesworth cool thank you how and where do i get my ao? what would be the best stores the xstreet freebie section has some nice items in it, I think many are using the bright ao from there (has iirc 4 in it. 2 for guys, 2 for girls) There are also plenty of clothing items and some hairs as well.

Hi Shalisha,
I will send you an invite to the Forum Cartel. We are an inworld group of many of the posters you see here. There is usually always someone online who can answer questions in world. There are also several other good places for new residents to go for help.

Shalisha, if you are less than 2 weeks old, hurry to Gurl 6 and get your free hair for newbies gift. go up the ramp and take a left. the walls right over there have the card, then you fill out the info and give it to Six Kennedy. she is very gracious to newbies. as mentioned, you can get a free Zhao AO on xstreet, or you can type that into search inworld, and probably grab one somewhere there. also, try "freebie" in search and go to all those places. my fave is Freebie Dungeon, because it has a LOT, but all the freebie places pretty much have all the same stuff. as far as friends go, head over to the Forum Cartel hangout in Allana and soon enough you'll run in to some people that are quite friendly indeed. good luck.

Hi Rockberry has a really nice free female AO. Your name sounds female. Also, Bare Rose has a freebie section (a stack of boxes) with a free male and/or female AO (animation override) as well as a lot of other things. Well actually it's all $1 Linden each, considered 'free' but actually a 'dollarbie'. Fleur has an entire set of male or female skins and it includes a free shape with it, for people new to Second Life only. The skins come in five shades from pale to dark. You can find Fleur in search/places (bottom of your screen in SL). The freebie skins are by the entrance. There are a lot of freebie shops and freebie blogs, it can be fun to chase down the higher-quality freebies. Here are a few links - if any don't work or the places are gone, or not great, let me know or post here, okay? I am including male and female resources both, although most will be for both anyway. This is because others reading might find some of the info of use, also. http://makehimover.blogspot.com (for men only, begins in June goes all the month of June) http://freebietelegraph.wordpress.comhttp://caitsfinds.wordpress.comhttp://fabfree.wordpress.comhttp://freefindsformen.blogspot.comhttp://ffform.wordpress.comhttp://puritansguidetosecondlife.blogspot.com/2007/07/freebies-on-sl.htmlThat last site lists some of the more popular freebie malls in Second Life. It doesn't list Yadni's Junkyard, which is another really good one. To use a SLurl: Click the link and it will show a map of Second Life. Click 'teleport now' and if your Second Life isn't open and running, it will trigger your sign in screen. Sign in and you will go to that location. If your Second Life IS open and running, then clicking 'teleport now' in that SLurl map will pop up a teleport link in your Second Life viewer. Just click 'teleport' on it like normal. To organise your inventory as you go: You can rename folders by right-clicking the folder name (or even the item itself, if it's modifyable). Then type in a new name. I recommend something with lots of good key words. Then when you search your inventory later for 'skirt' or 'pants' or 'top' or 'shirt' they will all come up. It may not read like a beautiful grammatical sentence but it will serve well in search. Then if you REALLY want to organise well - click inventory (bottom right corner), click File in there and choose "New Window." In that new window, choose Create and choose New Folder. Right click on the new folder and rename it some general category like - Shirts. Or, Outfits. Or even, Casual Outfits. Making a lot of folders of general categories and dragging ENTIRE folders (don't split outfits up) into those appropriate categories, as you acquire items, will save you much work later. Happy shopping.

I think Lil and Honeybear need to weigh in here. They are the freebie queens of these parts. You can't do much more with freebies than they both do.

Vista Animations offers a basic AO for 1 Linden. He has a male and a female version. It has a very nice HUD, too.

Well actually it's all $1 Linden each, considered 'free' but actually a 'dollarbie'. Just to clarify - or perhaps confuse some more: Strictly speaking, the AO - Animation Overrider or Animation Override - is the scripted attachment that overrides the default animations, using animations that are inside it. It's possible to get an AO that doesn't have any animations included, although usually there are a few samples at a minimum. There are many free AOs like this. These are designed so that you can add other animations to them. It's also possible to get AOs with a set of animations included that have been selected specifically for a given gender, hence Melita's suggestion of a female AO. The scripts that control the AO generally don't care, it's the choice of animations that make a particular AO male or female or unisex or whatever. You'll also find many like this that aren't free. They're not necessarily rip-offs; the value is in the animations that have been included, not the AO scripts. However, it takes some experience to know whether the animations that have been included are worth paying for.

AOs have been well explained already, so I'll skip that one. My favorite freebie store to take people is the Gnubie store, you can search for it. It has high quality things, and it's not so large and packed with huge boxes of junk. I think freeblie places like that are overwhelming, and your inventory will be feeling the pain of going to them for months! *wink* As for friends, IM me in world. I've been known to be friendly now and then

SinSkins also has a very good newbie pack of skins. I used theirs for nearly a year before I started purchasing skins. Many groups give out free skins too. If you can spare a few Lindens, a couple of the good ones are Tulli , Free Speerit, and MR Cupcakes (they recently changed heir name, not sure exactly what it is now; someone may want to check me on this). Also there is a clothing designer "A Piece of Candy" that does skins, and they always have a wall of $1L skins in their store, very nice ones in fact. Another place for very inexpensive skins is "Frick"; they have some freebies there if I remember correctly and some interesting fun ones too. I'd pick up as many free skins as you can because you never know which ones you'll like best plus, or which will work good on your avatar. Plus they all have different looks and many people like to wear different ones at times, to make them match outfits (if you're female of course - since the makeup tones can vary so much).

Another hint, once you get to the point where you want to spend some money (if you ever do) buy demo models before you buy the real thing. Especially with skins. Not all skins look good on all shapes. Hairs are another good thing to buy demos for when you can.

Honeybear has a gift shop in her Cherry Park mall that has free things to help you get started. She also has changing rooms to give people with no land a place to change their clothes. I'm not in world so I don't have the slurl but look up Honeybear Lilliehook's profile and check her 'pics' for a link to the mall.

I second the reccomendation of the Gnubie store, and I have to mention that I've always found good stuff at the Free Dove.
Enkythings L$1 store is another good resource (though as the name implies, most of the stuff at Enkythings is not, strictly speaking, free).

There are a variety of places that have stuff specifically for people in their first 30 days. Oh and I think it's Lindal Kidd who often mentions Lemania so I hope this isn't stealing any thunder. But on the corner of Lemania's sim, there is a dollarbie store. It has clothes and skins. She also, often, has dollarbies scattered around her store and sim.
Just search "Lemania" in Places.

Taking Classes
05-20-2009 10:03
Hi Shalisha! Something that I don't think has been mentioned yet and I personally strongly endorse is taking classes in SL. You can find them on your SEARCH button then select EVENTS and EDUCATION. The classes will be listed and by clicking on one you see what interests you, a box will appear giving the details of the class - description of class, time of class, how long it is, instructor, charge - if any, and a teleport button to get there Most classes are free and there is so much to learn in SL that a few good classes help you get in the swing of things, answer a lot of the questions you've asked and meet new people. NCI offers some great classes for new residents, including one on how to make a great looking avatar. There was one class I saw recently that actually took people on a "freebie shopping trip" to introduce them to the various free stores. Have fun!!!
