Hi,

I have recently been looking at boats and seen one I really like, a motor boat not a yacht. Boating and sailing seems to be a popular hobby/interest in SL and I would like to give it a go but before I buy one I have a few questions.

Are there any sims where "free" boat rezzing and sailing is allowed ?

What does the term "Protected water/land" mean ?

Are we able to use boats more or less anywhere or are there restrictions ?

Do you have any landmarks for locations where I would be able to use my boat ?

Being new to this, I would be grateful for any hints, tips or advice connected to boats and sailing etc.

Thank you

Hi Karena, boating is loads of fun in SL. :)

You can find many areas where you can freely rez a boat.

Usually "Protected" in that sense means that it is Gov. Linden owned land/water. So you can be sure that nobody is going to build some big thing and block your access to open water.

You can use boats more or less anywhere. The main restriction is if you try to enter a private plot with banlines. You'll bounce off. :)

To find nice spots, try a search for "marina" in places. You should find several.

Or, you could also open the world map and find the "Blake Sea" sims. They are all Linden owned, and while rezzing is restricted in them, many bordering sims have places you can rez at as a starting point.

Happy sailing!

ETA: If you want to moor up, and have a picnic on a beach, or explore an island, be careful. Pay attention to whether build is active, and on auto-return times. Or you could hop off your boat only to have it returned to you, and be unable to rez there.

Largest area for boating is the Blake Sea. You will find it due East of Nautilus City. Open the map and search for Nautilus City, then scroll east from there. There are several rezzing areas around the Blake Sea. Look for the rusty red buoys that mark a rezzing area.
Also, there are several public marinas around the Blake Sea. The Nautilus City Yacht Club Marina is on the NE corner of Alvensleben sim. You will be able to rezz your boat there and sail into the Blake Sea.
Happy Sailing! :D

What Calveen said. Also, look for the Gulf of Lauren, north of Bay City and West of the suburbs fr an additional sailing area. Same thing applies on finding rezzing areas. :-)

Advice on boats and sailing...Flee! Save yourself! :-)

Actually, one of the most potent curses I've ever heard came about in this manner...A VP of a then-major boat builder had borrowed one if his customers' boat to take it to a boat show. It broke down on the way home and I did an extensive repair job to get the engine running. The day the VP showed up to take delivery of the yacht it suffered severe damage to the topsides (an act of God, storm related the night before). This gentleman looked at it, simply turned away and quietly snarled under his breath... "Boats!".

I'm looking for the local marina scene too, when I have a few minutes to get my feet on the ground. Good luck! Jackie.

The Blake Sea is great sailing/boating/flying territory, to be sure. But also visit the Starboards Yacht Club, especially if you like sailing. Sailing isn't ALL about finding open water...it's also finding a group of like-minded people.

Do a Search Places for -
rez zone

That brings up a lot of places in Linden water sims wheer you can rezz boats.
It also brings up some resident-owned places beside Linden water that allow anyone to rezz.
Tir na nOg in Eldfell is just one that I kinda sort happen to be familiar with. ;)

It also brings up roadside zones is you fancy biking/driving.

in before the boat is bought (hopefully)...

i hope the boat you're ogling is not too antisocial (too high in prims). keep in mind that most water sims are homesteads or openspaces. and there are other people who want to sail / speedboat / fly there, too.

How about the winds?
04-22-2009 08:22
I've tried out several of the recommended sailing areas today, but I have to say the erratic SL winds make sailing less than fun most of the time. It seems impossible to get any kind of wind into your sails that keeps its strength and direction for more than a few seconds. How do you guys handle this? Is everyone using scripted winds or what?

The erratic wind problem has been solved by using what is called a "wind setter". You rezz your boat close to one (typically at a start line), and your boat gets the wind that the owner of the wind setter has chosen. Alternatively, most of the wind responsive sailboats are capable of having their wind parameters set by the owner. Read the manual :)
