i have tier free 512 through my premium membership that i'v never bothered to buy, i was thinking today that with the low prices i should buy one and build something random on it. perhaps eschers waterfall or his stairs (and with the david bowie 24 hour music feed that would be super fantasticaly awsome) i'm not inworld till later today so can't have a look but i was wondering if anyone knows of any escher-esk builds that i could look at and get some idea's from cheers EDIT: wanted to add this wiki link for people to learn more about M.C. Escher: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M._C._Escher-Crunch

A lot of Escher stuff can't actually exist in 3D, which is pretty much the point. Many of his drawings exploit the commonly accepted rules of what constitutes the illusion of 3D perspective in a 2D space, to turn those rules in on themselves.
"Waterfall" is a pretty good example of this. The form is an illusion, which only works in 2D. It cannot exist in 3D at all. You could do something that sort of looks like it, sure, but it would be missing the point. It would have to follow laws of 3D space, which would mean radically changing many of the angles involved. About the best you'd be able to say at that point is "Hey, look at this silly thing that defies gravity". All the brilliance of Escher's actual design would be lost, since his not only defies gravity, but defies space. By definition, that's just not something you can ever do in 3D.

Just popped over there and it is great fun but very hard to cam around.Twice while sitting I stood up to find myself dumped on the ground. I think the stairs need to be wider although that is nitpicking,It's worth a visit.

There are other kinds of illusions that are sort of Escher scrambled, putting 2D imagery on 3D surfaces which you only get the proper effect of viewed from a specific place. Stuff like this: So I guess one could start with an Escher drawing, project that onto a 3D build, and when you got in the right place, there would be an Escher drawing doing it's weird trickery on you.

There are a couple of things along the lines of the illusions that depend on viewing from a very specific angle which do work in SL, but in general the tricks are more like theater than 2d graphic design. The Ames room ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ames_room) works reasonably well from a number of angles close to the "perfect" angle: http://slurl.com/secondlife/xyz/133/20/500 I also managed a passable "impossible trident" using invisiprims: http://slurl.com/secondlife/xyz/230/49/500

From: Tegg Bode Ah, but can we depict 4D objects that can't exist in a 3D medium? Yes, but we don't have the time.
