This evening I watched some videos about Second Life on YouTube. What I became more interested in was the comments posted by viewers. Most of the videos were at least a year or two old.
Anyway, the comments generally broke down into these groups.
People who weren't familiar with SL but were nevertheless abusively scathing about the whole thing, how it was just a bunch of sad people wasting their lives.
People who played other games like WOW saying that their chosen game was much better than SL
People who did belong to SL saying that the types listed above didn't know what they were talking about!
It's interesting to see the views of 'outsiders' from time to time. One SL resident replied to one of the scathing skeptics that posting comments on YouTube is just as sad as living in a virtual world.
To me, the boundary between sad/non-sad is not when I log in to SL, but when I turn on the computer!

You're pretty accurate in that post about SL youtube comments.
I agree with the person who said it's as sad to criticize 'a loser' as it is to 'be one' - I hate that word anyway. Loser. What did they lose, except some total stranger's respect? Big deal.

Fair enough. I'm a loser. They win.
Now, are they any better off?

I do flick through them, but not often, and that is a fair description. It's aways interesting to see what commentary is flowing about, and what the more general world thinks. Try a visit to Massively ("daily news about MMOs" and check out the comments whenever a story is about SL. Comments there are often steered by non SLers to "should this lame stuff even get reported here?" and then the SLers replies of "we are happy it's *not* a game". And, happy in my loserishness, thankyou. Those of you who want your gameplay defined for you have plenty of other choices.

SL is not a game. A game has a common goal. SL is more like a virtual community where everyone's goals are different--some are here for the SL sex, some are here to market products, some are here as a way of doing business, some are here studying sociology, some are here as part of a university satellite program, and yes some are here to RP. But RP in here is not the POINT as it is with other virtual worlds such as WoW. It's only one of many options available in SL.

Wait.. there are comments on Youtube?! I've been missing out on a whole world of stupid and didn't even know it?! Righty-o. Yeah.. the stupid is strong in the Youtube comment sections. I rarely bother reading them because I swear I can feel my IQ points dip well beyond 0. Lameness is determined by how stupid much stupid one can post before one gets stoned or banned. Sadness is determined by whether one wants to take the lame ones seriously or not.

If you ever want a kick, go to any Chris Crocker video on youtube and read the comments people leave for him!

Sometimes I do feel like a loser logging in to SL or posting here, but then I guess I'm also a loser for all those years when I used television as a diversion instead of my computer.
Truth be told, I should be working on my writing projects instead of seeking distractions here. I'll be going back to them any minute now.
Hmmm, this would make a good "I'm leaving" final post...

If you're looking for sad diatribes about SL, try the register... http://search.theregister.co.uk/?q=sadville&site=0&psite=0Can pretty much guarantee the closedmindedness and scathing comments will piss you off, even if you don't really like SL all that much. Even the author of the articles is so anti-SL that his name for it is "sadville".

Between watching television, being on computer, being in SL, or spending time typing barely sensible youtube comments, especially after watching a video there which the typist professes no interest in - I'd put the latter at the top of the 'time waster' list. At least the other things make sense as a leisure pursuit.

Rock OMG, Very much so. Sometimes funny, yes, but the biased and angled commentaries against SL are BY FAR the worst I've ever seen by someone whos stuff is consistantly published. He sounds like a guy who tried it once but couldn't figure out the interface, or a guy who found out afterwards that he unwarily cybered a guy in "disguise" lol. The sad part is that the register is actually a very good site for industry and tech news, albeit in a very decidedly UK flavor.. err.. flavoUr. I read it all the time, and every time an article about SL shows up I just have to read what it's about... but every time one does show up, I can feel my ass clenching because I know it's gunna hurt
