Due to various reasons I can't access the grid too often at the moment. What I would like to see is a certain amount of grid content available through the SL website, for example IM,s profiles and my inventory.

Would anyone else be interested in this sort of thing?
How could I put this suggestion to the Lindens?

It's impossible to access inventory when the grid is down, as it is all stored on the grid essentially. There is a way to search profiles offline, not sure how though. There are also programs that let you do messaging without starting SL, but I don't know if they will work whenthe grid is down either.

sorry I don't mean when the grid is down. I'm limited to my laptop just now and can't run SL from it (its an old clockwork model) so to be able to have a real time IM coversation and to transfer inventory items without having to go inworld would be really helpful.

OK, well you can do messaging with those scaled down clients I mentioned , or have IM's go to email, but the inventory thing is still a no go, as far as I know.

If you can run a web browser like Firefox, check out AjaxLife.net. Might fill the needs you are looking for.
