Are alts ever linked to main accounts? I've had many many alts, and have never encountered the concept of accounts being linked. Perhaps you could explain what you mean.

You can't link it to your main account, you'd have to add payment info to it and make it premium as wlel if you so chose. There is no cost for alt accounts any more, or at least no way to pay for them like you used to have to

unless they changed that now but mine is a premium alt

I believe all my accounts are linked, I have two premium and two basic. When attempting to change the password on one of them I got a popup asking which account I want to change the password for and it listed all 4 accounts.

Yes, totally changed. There isn't even a box to say that it's an alt on the signup page any more.

Alts are free.

You can have up to 5 of them I believe. I don't understand why some people say they are still paying for alts? Is this someplace other than the US? You only pay if you upgrade to a premium account. Otherwise it's free, as your original Main Av would be.

Cortez, the only way it's "linked" is by the email address you gave when you sign up for your alt. Otherwise, it's free like your main Av is originally. You only pay if you want to upgrade to a premium account for any Av you create, be it a Main or Alt.

see you could pay a one time fee back then of 9.95 and your alt would be a premium account also instead of having another monthly payment of 9.95 a month.

Now thats interesting, I didn't know the 9.95 charge included premium benefits. Do the old 9.95 alts get a stipend also or am I pushing it?

no they don't get that ..i think because it is only a one time fee and no money is coming in from that account..it is that you can do everything else though like buy land or sims or whatever else a premium can do.
but you could only do this one time per premium account..if i had another payment account for another premium i could have one more but then i am getting into paying more to be in sl and i don't need that many..

Actually yes there was a time when a 9.95 account got 50L a week stipend.

And no they cannot own land. They can rent on islands. They can own islands. But they cannot outright buy land on the mainland.

There is only one way I am aware of to change your password, and you have to log on first to the SL website as a specific account to do it.

I don't think that's true. It was a one-time fee to be another basic account.

Until mid-to-late 2006, the signup wizard used to ask if the account you were creating was an additional account. If you said yes, you were prompted to enter payment info and charged the one-time alt fee. Eventually, that question was removed from the signup wizard (and doesn't appear in the signups for any of the 3rd party portals), and there is no way to tell LL that the new account is an alt.

HERE'S THE AWESOME PART!!!

If you look in the knowledge base you'll see that there's still an alt fee and that you can be banned for trying to get around it. Prolly outdated information, BUT THERE'S MORE. Even though you can't anymore say "this is an alt," LL still tracks how many avatars you create, and seems to limit them to 4 per person. I say this because I have 4 payment-info-on-file avatars, and I have not been able to create another account since, even if I supply a different email address. They are obviously looking at my RL name and zip code and limiting the number of accounts I can create, based on that.

This steams the heck out of me because this limitation kept me from creating an avatar with my RL first and last name, as well as that of my RL best friend. Meanwhile, Skin Oasis and theHood have 60+ no-payment-info-on-file traffic bots on their land doing nothing but gaming the system, whereas I've been denied the ability to create legitimate "model citizen" alt accounts. Grrrrr.

i just made my alt because i was bored one day and wanted to dress up another avatar..and yes i was prompted back then for the one time fee..i guess i was mistaken with the premium stuff but i really never have noticed a difference with limits on anything with this one..but then again i keep both in the same group..and for the life of me i would never buy land on main land anyways lol..i lag like a 1 legged dog on main land hehehee

It was on the website. I was logged in to the website on my main account and wanting to change the password for that account, although it listed my other 3 accounts in a pop up window asking which I wanted to change the password for. All of the accounts are registered in my real name, same payment info on them all (only 2 premium though). All 4 accounts have separate e-mail addresses associated with them.

I have 5 accounts, though admittedly two of them don't have payment info on file. I told LL I had them and asked them how I should pay for them, and was told I didn't need to - that they weren't charging for alts any more.

So why not just create your fifth alt as no payment info on file? One of your other characters can always give them money.

Well you can't even put payment info on file at signup anymore. You have to do that yourself in your My Account page. Problem is, they let me get all the way to the end of registration- to the point where they normally would send a confirmation email- and then said they weren't going to let me have the account.

The awesome thing? When they do this they permanently lock up the account name so you can never get the account again, even if you use completely different information next time around. At least now I know no one else will be able to get our RL names, but it still sucks big time.

If you call their billing line and explain to them that you really wanted that name and offer to delete one of your previous alts to keep you within their alloted amount, more than likely they will activate the account for you. I was able to do that when I reached my alt quota and the new slew of last names came out, there was one I really wanted and it cut me off at the end and locked the name. When I talked to them they were able to see the name I was attempting to register and activated it. It was a hassle though, they told me I had to delete an alt then issue a support ticket explaining the conversation I had on the phone as well as attach a scan of my drivers license to prove I was the one attempting to register...in the end I got the name though.
