Frequently when I am on a private island sim (chain of them) my prim optics glasses keep telling me it sees avatars, but I cannot see them on the map or minimap. Yes, I have cleared cache, etc - it has been happening for some time, and I am not the only one on the isle to notice it at times. Not sure if it happens anywhere else, no where else I go to has so few people

maybe the avatars are all high up in skyboxes that aren't on the map?

If it's a no-script area the last avatars listed in radar will still be listed even though the radar itself is not functioning. That probably isn't the info you need but I'll puit it out here just in case.

The only apparent exception I've seen is when people are standing right next to me. In that case their green dot is hidden under my big yellow one, so I can't see them.

Definately scripts allowed on this island chain, and it has happened at any altitutde, from 25 - 500.
Very Odd. I was wondering if there was something that would hide an avi, but couldn't find anything like that.

From: Talon DeCuir Very Odd. I was wondering if there was something that would hide an avi, but couldn't find anything like that. I have seen ads for things that made your av appear somewhere it actually isn't. It's a kind of animation that puts your body far away from your "center", meaning the place where your green dot shows on the map, and where your name tag is floating. This allows people to be seen without their name tag floating over their head, and also to effectively hide in combat situations. I don't understand it very well, and I've never seen one in action, but I'm pretty sure it can only displace your av like 30-50 m. Obviously the green dots would still show somewhere in your vicinity, so this probably isn't what is happening to you. And this is just a guess, but I would think that radar type devices would respond to the av "center", and so would be registering in the vicinity of the green dot, rather than where an av is visible. --- A couple of questions: (1) Is your radar telling you the names of the non-existant avs? (2) You say other people have noticed it... are they all using the same radar system as you? On possibility is ghost avs, people who crashed and left a semi-ghost inworld (sometimes visible and sometimes not)... a sim restart should solve this. The other theory... if everyone seeing this is using the same type of radar, I would say it's the radar script itself that's messed up.

Yes, the radar is telling the names of the non-existent avs. I know one of the two other people whoh ave seen this use the same radar as I do. I will check the other.

There is another group of avatars that you might not be able to detect - the Lindens.
From observation, I found that some of these radars can at times show you upto distance of 200m especially when near to the boundaries of a region.

I am at a camping spot right now where there are 2 AV's (which I am 99% certain are bots) that are present but not on the minimap or the main map. I did not think this was possible -- is this an SL glitch I hope?
I don't like the idea of there being a way to make an avatar not show up on the maps.
EDIT - Nevermind. I brought someone else into the sim to check it out, and it turns out the AV's are not really there. I guess somehow my client missed the data saying they had left (or had gotten ejected). I can still click on and read their profiles, though.

We've seen a few of these, where someone's av is present even after they've been disconnected. In one case, it turns out the av didn't even know... she was logged on elsewhere having fun, with no idea that her lifeless doppleganger was still hanging out.

There is a quirk to the Sensor function in SL. sometimes you can pick up AVs up to 400 meters away, even though the limit for a sensor is supposed to be 96 meters. If i recall the explanation I received correctly, it happens if the AV is sitting. In any event, If there is another island next door to the island you are speaking of, these 'ghost' AVs may well be there.

Thanks for the update - that makes sense - as I started IM'ing the ghosties and they were on same island chain, but on the far lower left corner or the SIM to the south west. Almost a SIM and a half away.
