I've built a one-story house which measures about 29 meters N-S and 29 meters E-W (counting a 9 meter pool adjoined to the west side). When I "lasso" the house from above and try to link it, I get the "objects too far apart to link" message. I'm new at this, and I was surprised to find that I couldn't link what seems an ordinary sized house. (I'm sure I am not including anything beyond the structures borders.)
Is there any way to overcome the link distance limitation in a case like this?
Thanks for any help.

In a word NO.
Search the Building tips forum on this subject there is a post all about the maximum linkage of prim distance.
Also, you may consider reposting this thread to Building tips not under resident answer, confusing I know.

Get a copy of rez faux from SLX. Will solve your problem and it's cheap as chips.

Usually this happens when something in the prospective linkset is both small and has an origin distant from the center of the set (a doorbell button, say). It's not supposed to work, but once in a while one can "trick" stuff into linking by pre-linking subsets and then linking the subsets together... but usually this doesn't work either, so it's probably not worth the time to experiment with it. If one is just trying to get a convenient collection of stuff to "Take" so it can be rezzed again in proper relative position, it's not necessary to link it anymore--can just take the composite into inventory, if that happens to help. (Oh, yeah: Building Tips will be more helpful, as suggested. But I typed all this already )

Thanks for your help!
I will look at the Building forum. Sorry I didn't know about that. But if I could ask one more question about Oei's answer: How would I put the composite into Inventory (to preserve relative positions of all the objects in the building) if I can't link the whole?
Thanks again.

Don't spend money on a script to link the object together! There is a wonderful open source script called 'Builder's Buddy' that'll do this for you. I'll send you a copy in world. If you're, justifiably, nervous about using scripts sent to you by strangers then just Search for Builder's Buddy in these forums and you should find it posted in the scripts section. To answer your last question, if you select multiple objects and 'Take' them all at once they should remember their relative positions when you re-rez the package from your inventory. However, this is a bit buggy and it's much safer and easier to use a tool such as Builder's Buddy.

Thanks again. Lasso around the whole house, right click the highlighted objects and take copy. When you drop it back out from your inventory, it will all come out in the same relative positions as it was when you took the copy. I also advise you to look into the rezfoo or one similar. It makes building larger, multi prim objects far easier.

I've also found that the linking distance is relative to how well SL is behaving. I've had two poles about 5m apart not link on one day (with the distance message) and the link just fine on others.
I'll agree, get the rezzer for it, if you have to move it. It's a great tool for any big scale builder. I don't use it, because my big scale is done on site...

If done this way, your build will drop into position and not be able to me moved/rotated. instead, Open up an edit box BEFORE dropping it onto the ground from inventory. This will allow you to move and rotate the entire build as one piece. Once you have it as you want it, close the edit box and the build will appear as its original configuration of mutliple, unlinked pieces. Once you're done editing/building, pull it back into inventory as brick said and label it with a revision number.
