It's been a long time since i last played, and oviously things have changed. So basically i was wondering much L$ it costs to purchase a 512 plot?

It varies widely. From people giving land away to people selling it at prices all over the map. A lot depends on location, does the owner need to sell, and all sorts of variables.

I'm just looking for the average price of a mainland plot.

The auction starts them at 700L. I paid 2000L for mine a year ago, but prices have come down since then. I don't think one buys a 512 for an investment anyway.

Once they open up the new Linden Homes, you'll be able to get a 512 for free.

Once they open up the new Linden Homes, you'll be able to get a 512 for free.

but those have big limits, got one myself in the beta, fixed house, no skybox, no joining or selling, no deeding to groups, one per account, no mega prims, no shouting, no sandboxig, need to keep it repectable. on the plus side it is free and the house does not count against the prims so you have the full 117 prims for decorating, most houses have protected land all around.
I got lucky and got a house looking out to a protected parkland sim but you can only pick the type of house not where it will be.

Sure, but they will still create a downward pressure on the cost of land once they get out of beta.

I had to sell one last week quickly so I could do a deal on my sim.I checked the prices and put it at 750 and waited for 5 minutes nothing, then dropprd it to 700 sold in a blink.

Things are looking up, then. I dumped one at 750 just an hour or so ago; bot was there instantly. Lowest listed price was 760 at the time.

Should be plenty around for between 1000 and 1500 Lindens, unless you want beach front or road side or something.

There is one right next to me -- it is a total water plot -- selling for L$10.n per m, which is way too high in my mind.
