noob question ( please help)

how do I search for someone if I am using a free account?

shouldn't search work even if I have a free account?
the only way I can go anywhere is from landmarks sent to me by others or that I have myself saved but I can not search new places or people

for some reason the search functions never work on anything I try no matter whetrher I look for a person or landmark and typing in coordinates refuses to work either

please someone help me did I maybe get a bad install? or is there some feature I need to turn on?

I am still new but when even the basic stuff does not work it seems like this just is not worth even logging onto please someone email me at [email]donwolfani@gmail.com[/email] and help me fix this so I can finally explore

Should be no problem,but you need the exact name.

Remember to select PG, mature and adult in those picky little boxes. Spell correctly. Try a group like "Sex Addicts" or "Forum Cartel". See what happens. Try my profile. I love it when people read all about me.

Doesn't this sound like he's not connecting fully? Make sure no firewalls or anything are blocking you.

Some people with paying accounts would also claim search doesn't work - so don't feel bad.

Depending on what you're searching for, you might want to start in the All tab. Try the word "freebie" in the All tab or "dance" in the Events tab. Those ought to pull up lots and lots of hits. If they don't, I'd say something is messed up and it may not be your computer, it may be only temporary. For a week or so recently I couldn't get the Showcase tab to work for me at all.

I still say "Sex Addicts" would be a good start.

Could be a number of problems.

If you are still on Help Island, you can't use the Map or Search to teleport. You have to use one of the designated Exits to a welcome area on the main grid. After that, you can move about and Search normally.

If you are looking for Adult content, there's a new process you have to go through first. You have to become "account verified". You can do this in one of two ways. 1) Give LL your credit card # or a PayPal account, so you have "Payment Info on File". or 2) Go through the Age Verification process managed by LL's third party provider, Aristotle. After doing either of these things, check Adult in both Edit/Preferences/General and in the Search window.

Or it could be some sort of wonky installation, or a connection problem.

no my firewall allows secondlife otherwise it wouldn't connect at all would it and besides I remember telling it too allow the program when I first installed



I have my friends exact name and have tried it with and without capitals

for some reason it always says none found no matter what I search for

is this because of a crap internet connection or is it a bad installer because I am thinking of redownloading the installer not that it will help most likely

and I can't contact linden about this issue because when I go to send in a ticket it says there are limited options for free accounts and when I click the thing to send a ticket for a free account it refuses to pull up

There is no limitation to Search based on the payment status or membership status of your account.

I hate to say this, but is it possible your friend got suspended or banned from SL? When someone's account is suspended, you can not find them in Search. If they are reinstated later, they show up again. If banned forever, they would vanish forever. Or if they were under-age and got caught and sent to the Teen Grid, they would vanish until they actually turn 18. An account which is voluntarily cancelled will also be eliminated from Search.

I recently had a very nice-seeming young lady contact me about building for her. I gave her a bid, and when I went back to confirm some details before starting work, found the account had vanished completely from the grid. Her only other friend that I knew was still on the parcel this person had been renting, with no clue where the girl had vanished to, other than a suspicion her account had been "deleted by a Linden". My suspicion? Under-age in RL, and got caught. I had no proof of that, but I certainly couldn't envision her Player doing anything that would otherwise have gotten ger suspended or banned. She had seemed somewhat innocent and clueless, but certainly not a troublemaker.

If you had exchanged Friendship with the person, you should still have their calling card in your inventory. Or do you have any pictures, notecards, or prim items that they created and gave to you? Look for one of those, and copy their name exactly from that source, and search for them again. Just to make sure you didn't misspell their name. After all, many SL surnames contain intentional misspellings from the "right way to spell the name". If you still can not find them, then their account is probably suspended, banned, or voluntarily cancelled.

People can click 'do not list in search' and their profile won't be in search.

Have you tried other names?

Lindal e.g. asked if you where still on the entry location (where you first landed when first logged in for the very first time). It's called Help Island, if i'm not mistaken, anyone correct me if i'm wrong, with a number next to it

it's at the top bar, next to the little icons and het drop down menus.

If that's the case, then you know why you cannot search.

could you give us your location on the grid?

Click on map, press my location, then copy to clipboard button, come back here, and paste it in your post.

By any chance are you using a wireless Internet connection? SL has had serious issues in the past with wireless access, and SL does not officially support wireless connections. Not to say they don't work at all on Wireless, but it isn't as stable that way.

If you can not successfully find ANY names in the "All" search tab (like your own name, or my name), then I would suggest you do a complete uninstall of Second Life and reinstall it. You will not lose any of your inventory or stuff. That is all kept server-side, and has no bearing on which computer or client you are using.

On the other hand, if you were on the "Places" tab and searching for a name, you might well find nothing, even if they do exist.

As for the poster possibly being on the Orientation of Help islands being an issue, unless they changed things recently, you most certainly CAN do both a people search and a map search while still there. I've created alts, used Search to offer friendship to my main account, accepted Friendship with my main and sent the alt a ton of new stuff, including purchased avatars, and then invited them to my land group and sent them an LM to hop directly to my home on a private island. I've also created alts and immediately done a map search for a sim name, and teleporterd away to that sim without doing any of the Orientation or contacting any other account.

We are listening, Don. You just are not being specific enough. When you "type it in", please describe EXACTLY what you are doing. SL has several ways to Search.

For example, if I want to find a person in world, I....

1. Log on to SL
2. Click the Search button at the bottom center of my screen
3. Click the People tab in the Search window
4. I have PG, Mature, and Adult checked in the Search window
5. I enter the person's Second Life name in the search entry bar and click Search (Note: try entering Lindal Kidd here)
6. Their Profile appears, and I then click Send IM if I want to send them a message.

If you do all that, and exactly that, and get None Found, then you have some sort of serious connection problem or a bad install of the viewer software. Or you are on Teen Second Life.

no I was not on the starting island but still search never worked till finally today after using the age verification thing and redownloading the viewer it finally started working

Don't be alarmed, it is normal, Search doesn't work for anyone anymore

yeah except now even though search works for me I can't buy anything


everytime I buy anything it gives me the little box or icon thing that sells it but not the advertised item

am I doing something wrong?

I right click and hit buy but this gives me the little ad box that I clicked instead of what I am tyrying to buy and I do not want to reinstall a second time in less than 2 days

It sounds as though what you've bought was delivered in a box or other packaging. Find it in your inventory, drag it to the ground on land where build is enabled, then click on it and choose 'open' to unpack it and then copy the item(s) to inventory.

When you buy something it is almost always in a box or other gift packaging.

Right click, choose open. Choose copy to inventory. Now it will be in your inventory. Anything since your last log-in will be in the recent things tab in inventory.

Then, right click on the box again, and choose take, to pick up the litter. (No one else can do it.)

Some places do not allow boxes to be opened there, so figure out places that do, so you can go there. Some people use sandboxes for this.

When I first came to sl I was a dweeb like you and I had to be taught to click to open and load to inventory.

on all clothing I have bought before it was always added to my inventory as useable items

but now it copies the box selling it to the objects folder in my inventory instead of where useable clothing usually goes

Some items are sold as single objects. Those are no problem. Some clothes are sold in a folder. Those are no problem.

Lots and lots of items are sold "boxed". You just have avoided them somehow, up until now.

Don't fret, just go to a place where you can rez objects...the building area at Help Island Public, for example. Drag the item onto the ground. Right click it , select Open, and either manually select the items in the contents list, and drag them to your inventory, or use the Copy To Inventory button.
