Hiding Streaming IP Address

Hello,

I've figured out how to put shoutcast on my Mac so I can play my streaming audio of my podcasts through Second Life. Now, I'm sure this won't last long because the company I host from will have my head. LOL However, I just want to try and see if people like it before I spend a bunch of money on a streaming server that accepts the stream.

Here's my problem - because of the nature of the program I do not want people to know where my IP address exists. :) I really don't want to find Joe Blow on my doorstep one morning wondering why I skipped a day of sm@ll p3n1s humiliation or whatever was on my menu for that week. Is there a way to hide my IP address? Maybe relay the station so that no one can see it? I know that you normally see ***** when looking at the music stream on other people's land but then I heard you can get around this easily.

I know anything is possible on finding out where an IP is from because I know how to do it, I'm just trying to make it a bit harder to find. Or, am I stuck renting server space out there?

Thanks,
Aeval OKelly

I never heard of a way to see the ip on someone elses land

and do not know of any way to hide it (except maybe using a stream changer, but then I think it still would set the stream on the land...)

maybe someone will know something

In the Client menu, turn on View Admin Options, then when you look in the About Land dialog Media tab you see the values for the media url and the music url .

Also you can turn on the Client /Consoles /Debug Console and see the urls in the midst of all the others, and also, you can do Client / Console Window which will cause the message stream to appear in a command prompt window, which you can then copy and find the urls manually, or run a link finding program on and collect them all at once.

Well .. bad news I'm afraid , using Linux the background terminal ALWAYS gives the stream address, even when its hidden on about land.
The only thing I can suggest is go with a free DDNS server. There are many out there.this will mask your direct IP and instead anyone nosing will just see your DDNS address.
I use one if ever I stream to anywhere from my home IP.

yeah, you can probably do that with the terminal in the mac os too.

i read about the admin menu in one but i don't have that on my mac client so i don't know.

why even x it out then? geesh. probably just an easy to way to keep the music companies off their back i suppose.

well, i won't be posting my broadcast until i find a way. bummer, too. i'll be using my own music anyway so i'm not worried about raia or whatever they're called. i just want it for my own anonymity. i mean, why use 2nd life otherwise?

any of the free hosts will serve you ok . all any one would see then is yoursever.homelinux.org or similar . I have 5 domains set up for different reasons. worked fine for a long time too :)

unless they did an nslookup on the subdomain and then the ip address shows up right there. :(

you can make it slightly harder by using a free dns service... they won't see your IP, but rather a domain name (which they could look up the address on)... or to prevent people leaching of your streams rotate the ip or url used every few days and make sure if it's a url that you redirect the old one to another IP.

or just don't use it in SL and instead give the url to the people you want to listen and have them use it from an app outside of SL (as a benefit you can run better compression streams this way, I prefer 24kbit aacp, which sounds as good as 128kbit mp3 @ ~ 5times the listeners)

The media & music were always greyed out, except to the owner (group etc) of the land... since the recent client updates, that's no longer the case, unless you manually switch it off. You need to have sufficient land rights to do this, though.

Go into the media tab in the land menu and tick one, or both, hide URL boxes.

I wasn't aware you could do a nslookup on a Dynamic DNS SERVER . Thats the whole point of them , Maybe you dont understand what I'm saying , Have a look here

http://www.dyndns.com/ (I believe you can make up to 5 accounts with this provider)

I have a static IP Address and wouldn't dream of streaming or serving using my real address These services are the only people who will have your real IP address, you will choose a domain name you wish to use, , Ppl then connect to the DDNS host you have your domain with who then bounce the request to your machine. so if you were streaming from SL you would put your DynDNS host name in the media box, your real ip is never seen. I've ran some pretty heavy traffic servers using this method so its going to be fine for streaming audio , depending on the upload speed of your connection of course( But that would be a factor as a direct connection also). You could also further mask by bouncing the connection Pre or Post DDNS too, Although I've never had a need to do this.

go to a terminal window and do an nslookup on your domain. your ip address will show.

the reason why they make dynamic dns services is not to hide the IP address but to allow servers with dynamic ip addresses to use a domain name. it doesn't hide the ip address.

i'm just going to have to find a realistic hosting company that hosts files and does the stream i guess. :) i need to do it for the podcast anyway.

the one i tried earlier keeps munching my mp3's when uploading so i'm going to have to try another.

Thanks

If I were on your land listening to your streaming music and wanted to know the source IP of the music server, I would get on my console and figure it out, it wouldn't be very hard and I wouldn't have to look at your About Land whether that info is hidden or not.

If you wanted to stream music from your IP and keep it hidden, you will have to proxy/nat it through a 3rd party provider.
