I have a friend with a pay account and several alts that she uses for business purposes. I think she is confused about how to work them. She claims that she is a the legal limit for the # of alts that she can create and she can't delete them. I have a free account and made and deleted an alt as a test... is she mistaken about her alt information or is there a difference between a pay and free account?
Thanks!

Thanks! I don't think there's a limit on number of alts unless you have 50,000 of them and using them as a griefer's army. Your friend may be talking about the number of accounts allowed to share one email address, which, if I am not mistaken is 5? Someone will correct if I'm wrong about that, but the alts themselves, I doubt if she's at 'the limit'.

I heard that you may have one FREE alt,but afterwards you must pay 10 dolllars per each alt. Can't understand anyone wanting 50 or more alts. Must be a mess to log on each day.

there was a time when the first account was free and then any alt was 10 bucks, but that has not been the case for years.
Make all you want, they all count as residents for the boardroom spin. So as long as they are not being used for abuse, LL does not care.

There is a limit of 5 accounts per household, but I don't know of any restrictions on deleting alts. Here's a link to Lexie Linden's post about alts: https://blogs.secondlife.com/thread/1180

There WAS a limit of 5 pr household. That limit is defunct, and has been for years. You can have as many as you want now, so long as you don't abuse them.
However!
Limit of registering two new ones per day from the same IP address.
Limit of 5 on a single payment method? (I think)
Limit of 5 per lifetime on a single PayPal account as payment method. Does not matter if you delete some, you can't back-fill with new ones.
Limit of 5 on a single e-mail address? (Better off with new e-mail for each alt.)

You can have 5 per email address as far as I know. I only have the 5 and that is more than I need. Alts are like personalities, you can have too many of them

I imagine that using Gmail's pseudo-disposable addresses (add a "+" between your username and the "@" then write just about anything you want between the "+" and the "@" and it still goes to your email, and msgs sent to that address can be easily filtered by the for field) would bypass the per email limit. Though I do it like this with my main account and alts for filtering purposes, I haven't gone past 5 alts per email yet, so I haven't really tested if they don't cap the alt count in spite of the apparent differences in the email address, but seeing how they handle things like age verification, keyworld filtering, backgroundcheck for Teen Grid professors etc, I imagine they won't be checking for this properly, or even at all.
Though depending on where you create the alt account, they might mistakenly identify the "+" sign as an invalid character for email addresses (I believe the standards do allow it, otherwise emails sent to such addresses wouldn't realiably reach the destination), just to be safe, keep even the email of your main account using the + trick and if you have dificulties registering with such addresses, use the address without the trick and then change the associated email address associated with that account thru the official LL SL site

Being billed $10 for alts disappeared in 2006 when anyone could sign up without payment info on file. I don;t think they've updated the knowledgebase yet though

Yes, and the same "can't delete one and create another" applies. From: someone Limit of 5 on a single e-mail address? (Better off with new e-mail for each alt.) Yes. And if you create the character through a non-Linden portal it can block you at one, rather than five.

It's been a while, but I'm fairly certain that last year I tried to create an alt, got a message that I couldn't create it because I had too many, and then had an account deactivated so I could create a new one.
