Broken & distorted looking shapes?

I was wondering about a small issue I'm having with my avatar, I don't know if it's the shape or skins I buy but for some reason when I'm in certain poses parts of my avatars body appear 'broken'. This goes not just for my main but for my alts and my friend who bought both the AO and the Skins from the same place. On top of that, I also have these annoying creases on either side of the nose and often under certain lighting the shape appears to be very, well almost distorted looking? I don't know if that's supposed to happen but somehow I doubt it.

My shape wasn't bought custom, it was donated to me by a friend and had full perms (So I assume it was just the basic starter shape but modified somewhat here and there?)

Would buying a pre-designed shape fix this? I do know someone who creates really top quality shapes and offers custom work considering I'm happy with the face/height etc. but before shelling out the money I wanted to know if this would be the solution to my problems?

No.

No one has the ability to fix problems caused to your avatar by unflattering lighting or animations.

For creases and such that appear in certain lighting, you might try a facelight, which is a transparent glowing prim that you wear attached to your nose or chin or such - it hovers in front of your face casting a soft glow that smooths out those creases (assuming you have local lighting turned on in Preferences).

Some skins come with facelights. If you don't have one you can easily make one or find a freebie one; if you IM me in world I can give you one later tonight but someone else will almost certainly beat me to that.

Paying money for a shape won't help. Shapes that you buy are made using the same sliders as shapes you make yourself; no magic there.

Oh, I see. Well that just plain sucks :P But thanks for the really fast response.

I suppose a new AO is in order, then.

Ok, firstly...all shapes are created using the same edit appearance format we all have.....it doesn't matter where you bought it...we all use the same tools to make shapes. The joints of the avatars will appear to unhinge in certain poses...it's just the way the mesh underneath the shape is translating the position....again, doesn't matter what shape you've got...certain poses will do that. The only exception to that would be non-human shapes that are created using prim attachments, like dragons, or certain furries....

The skin texture is done in photoshop or a similar program and a lot of the harsher shadows and defined areas on the surface of the face & body depends on the artist who did the skin......some skins look better in certain lighting than others. Face light does help a lot to smooth over the shadows..... The default skin that we all start with is probably the worst tho, because it looks so flat and cartoonish ... so it's best to play with the atmosphere settings (if you have windlight) and grab a face light somewhere. Lots of places offer them free with their skins.
