You need the shoutcast server (http://www.shoutcast.com/), you then need winamp with the plug-in to go with the shoutcast server, then if you have a firewall you need to allow out the port shoutcast uses, its 8080 I think by default.
Once the winamp plug in and the Shoutcast window says its running, there should be a transfer rate in the plug-ins "output" tab, go to http://www.ip-adress.com/, or a site like that which will tell you your IP, you can do it through command prompt and typing "ipconfig" but that will sometimes bring up a LAN IP if you use a router and that is no use Set your land in SL to HTTP:// <then whatever that IP was> :8080 (assuming the shoutcast port is 8080) Please note: You personally will NOT hear the music on your land, others will, so you will need someone on another IP to verify its working, the shoutcast server window will tell you if there are any listeners also. Streaming to more than a few people is very taxing on your internet connection, if you have broadband you may think its super fast but broadband speed is in the download speed, your music is going the other way and bandwidth for sending on broadband is way lower than receiving, you will be in lag city when a few are listening. Most IP addresses are dynamic, you IP changes whenever you disconnect or your ISP disconnects you, so when this happens you will need to find your new one and change the land settings to it still with the :8080 on the end. |

The answer above is a great one. If you're using a mac...you'll need Nicecast, 'sted of Shoutcast to do the job.

Unless I am mistaken, utilising shoutcast is ok, if you want full control over the playlist dynamically, such as a DJ for instance.
Should you however simply want to play some of your favourite tunes (assuming you have the broadcasting rights), you could just set them to 16bit 44,100htz mp3 format and load them onto a decent webhost on the internet. Then add the urls into a player ingame which allows you to swap the urls remotely. That won't effect your own personal system or bandwidth. Bearing in mind that you will need the urls that point to the source media, not a webpage (http://www<mywebhost>.com/music/myfavtune.mp3) for that you will need to ftp the media files direct to the webhost system. This is not the same as hosting on say blip.tv, YouTube etc etc, as these do not resolve into direct source urls. _____________________

A Solution!

Hi All
If you want to listen to your own music on your land then check out 'MediaMaster'...just Google it. You will need to be prepared to spend some time uploading your fav's to their web site..then you can make your own playlists..each one will automatically be given its own 'URL' which you copy and paste into the media slot in preferencies. To listen to your own music anywhere in SL you need to paste the 'URL' into a media player on your hard drive, my choice is Foobar, the best free player on the Internet, not the best to look at though!..but can be skinned if you want to take the time to learn it...also plays 'ASIO' I am listening to my Beatles collection at the moment on my land and anywhere I TP to. All of this is free...I also have shoutcast set up on my Laptop should I want to DJ in my club...all works well but with a 15 second delay so you need to monitor that one on your headphones...Shoutcast is also free...but a little complicated to set up router and firewall permissions...but!..if I can work it out...then so can you..! Come and check out how it sounds ....search for 'Cain's Castle' in places and come on over and have a listen...if I am on line I will be happy to help if I can..I am not a PC expert though...just enjoy my music and made the effort to hear it..! Oh!..an after thought..I am not trying to drum up buisness...everything is free at my place and the traffic is so low, one or two people coming over wont make any difference....I think you may also notice I am a bit of a Beatles fan...lol! You are using iTunes on Windows. iTunes itself does not broadcast unless you are on an Apple computer, running Nicecast. However, you can probably do it if you run Winamp in sound card mode (or something like that, forgot the name).
Are you running Shoutcast in the sound card mode? There are 2 modes you can use: one where the data buffers and then is sent out over the stream, and one where the input comes directly from your sound card. If you run in sound card mode, you may be able to play iTunes and have it broadcast with no delay. _____________________

as for how to do itunes I am clueless but watching to see if I can learn something (I use sam3 and shoutcast) can itunes files be played outside of itunes? (sorry do not know much about itunes) or does it have it's own filetype? _____________________

I don't use streaming, or a webserver. I have that handy mp3 player from Applications of the Mind in Hoini. I upload my favourite mp3s, including some nice compilations in a single mp3, to my webspace, and play them directly in SL. Perfect. Nothing to set up whatsoever, except for putting the url of your mp3 into a notecard, and even I can manage to do that.
