I need help please!

Hi everyone, Im new here and Im having some problems with second life.
I just installed it today on my laptop but everytime I start it.. My laptop crashes (shuts down)
So what does this mean? Am I doing something wrong? I really want to play Second life..
Im hoping i opend this thread in the right forum.
Its all new to me!

If you know, can you post the details on your hardware, PC or Mac, Operating System level, processors, memory, graphics card and network connection? Also the version of the viewer...I'll assume you just downloaded it and are on 1.23.

Hi Jeanine, and welcome.

You need to give more details about your laptop and what happens when you crash. Do you get an error message? Does it go to a blue screen?

Post as much detail as you can and someone will be sure to help you.

I guess I had one error message.. im not sure.. all i remember it said to send some kind of report..
But know everytime I start it just crashes.. not right away but after a minute or so.. my laptop just shuts down ..

You say it goes for a minute or so. How far do you get into the login process? Does it get past the bar that says "loading world" and then "loading clothing"?

Right now, i clicked on second life and I got this: Second life alert
Second life appears to have frozen or crashed on the previous run. Would you like to send a crash report?

Hi Jeannine. We particularly need to know what graphics card or chips this PC has - on the net, i see some PRO55's with ATI RADEON graphics that I am a little suspicious of .. but none that I found were the model you have.

I don't know about vista, but on XP, if you right-click on a blank area of the desktop, you get a popup menu, and one entry on it is usually your graphics driver. Go to that and it should tell you the card. Or, get it from your System or Device setup dialog.

oh well this is weird.. now im playing second life and it still hasn´t crashed .. the movement is really slow.. I think my laptop cant handle the game

Oh, great! QUICK: go to the Help menu, choose "About", and cut-and-paste the computer specs there into a message here.

Go into Edit Preferences/Network and adjust the bandwidth setting down. Then see if you can find the "Draw Distance" (maybe someone can help with that) and reduce it. In the Preferences/Graphics setting set the slider to "Low". Some of these may help. It should run SL based on the specs.

This is really hard for me.. Im from the netherlands so all the things in the game is in dutch language..

You can change the language.

Go to Edit/Preferences/General (I think it's the General tab, the first one). Change the Language selection from "Dutch" or "default" or whatever it is now to your preferred language. Log off and restart SL again.

Ok now my caracter is walking normal.. not slow so I guess its good now I changed the language also.
But now I have another question..
How can I go to other places? do I have to have money for that on the game or what?
It always takes me some time to figure something like this out..
But a little help wouldnt hurt haha

And what places can I go to.. (i hope i dont need money for that)

You will start in the Orientation Island. Go through the tutorials there and also grab all the freebie stuff that you can find, you'll want it later. Then you can exit (never to return, by the way) through the gates with the sign to enter 2nd life. Then you can start to teleport to places. I'd recommend you open up "Search" (bottom of the screen) and use the Places tab and search on Oxbridge Caledon. This is a good place for new residents to start. When you open up the hit for Oxbridge, you will see a button saying "Teleport".

That should get you started. You can also search on the "Cartel Hangout" in places and go there. Lots of us who answer these questions can be found there, but it's sometimes empty. More free stuff there, too.

Ok well I went to Oxbridge Caledon to get free stuff.. now I got free stuff.. also another hairstyle but when I attach it to the skull a box appears instead of the hairstyle?? I dont get it
Same as with clothes.. a box shows on my avatar it looks weird haha..

Click Search at the bottom of your viewer. Click Places and begin searching for what you want to find. Most places are free to visit.

You do not need money but it makes things easier.

NCI is a good place to go try to get some help as others have said. Sometimes you can find a good Infohub also.

To go home, I think it's World/Teleport home. Top of viewer.
