Hi there, Just thought SL artists, and others, might want to hear about The Omni Market and Art Gallery. It's a new SIM dedicated to art of all kinds. Artists have their own purpose-built spaces. I have a gallery there displaying some of my original pieces and it's so good to be surrounded by lots of other SL artesians. The range of styles is amazing and extend to some veryyyyy interesting, zany sculptural pieces throughout the grounds. Several famous (sadly dead) rl artists are also represented, such as Picasso and Van Gogh. Audio tours are available. Better still, the SIM is actively promoted in a variety of ways by a dedicated, busy committee. Activities are run regularly, including live music. It's a great place for people to browse, socialise or buy. I just thought I'd post this in case anyone wanted to visit or to establish their own gallery in SL. To get there, simply use the following SLurl. http://slurl.com/secondlife/giradikon/39/152/81/Keep smiling, C

I beg to differ about your opinion about this place. I was over there, and it looks like a mall. The appearance is terrible. No thought has been put into it; plywood over astroturf. The art, is housed in what I called "masoleum like" spaces. A person looking for art, would have to manuever through like 100 similar box-like spaces - each a replica of each other. Noone can tell one from the other. It does not make for a pleasant experience if one is shopping for art at all. In fact, it made me want to TP right out of there. It is mind numbing, cavernous and not designed to help an artist who is hoping to get recognition for their work. I don't see how you would be able to find a specific artist in that maze of boxes at all. Additionally - trying to put real artists in the same place as "dead" artists detracts from the work which they are trying to do. It's putting someone with current talent in the middle of a giant poster store of your local strip mall Sorry to say, IMHO, a complete failure as far as featuring art.

Yeah, I saw it too - a friend has a space there. Its alright I guess but rather soulless from first impression. I'm sure over time it'll develop into something more interesting.
I gave her some space at my free texture shop. I'm only using about a third of the space and being artistic myself I've kept working on the area off and on to make it look nice. If you're interested, give me a shout.

I disagree. I wouldn't call it soulless. I like the orange and gray curly-cue thingies positioned everywhere, and the idea of having a vast area full of art to explore would appeal to me, except --
I know from experience there are practical limitations to how many textures you can comfortably cram into one place. They just take too long to appear making exploration unpleasant. Far better I think to have a modest sized parcel with odd nooks and crannies where one might stumble upon unexpected art. That's the ideal for me.
On a side note I am disappointed to see so much RL photography in galleries. I like photography, but nothing jars me out of the immersion in a virtual world quicker than a crisp clean decidedly non-cartoonish photograph. Paintings do not have this effect. It's not bad enough for me to presume to say people shouldn't show them. I just find them disappointing.
Though I have a gallery of sorts myself, more and more I'm beginning to think of the environments we create as the real art of SL. Why paint a fantasy world when you can build it and walk through it?

Every time I go there, I keep thinking to myself, "where is this name familiar from?" and the clouds finally parted - from here. D'oh! People, Soen's texture shop is absolutely free of charge and it's called Lathe of Eber. It's really good - I give its landmark out to people all the time and have for some time now. Also there are places to sit while you sort and rename the textures afterward (I like to rename them to my specs, for easy searches later). I like the room upstairs with the comfy chairs and fireplace. It's a very cozy welcoming place. Shameless plug but since it's not my place and I profit nothing from it no one can say a thing. Neener neener. ;P

I see a lot of non-native English speakers in-world using the word "Free" to mean available for rent or purchase, rather than the more common meaning of no-cost, $0, come and take it.

It was a point I forgot to make in my reply which is very important. The Owner, wanted something like $3-400L a week to rent the space there for the person who was thinking about it my case (it was not me personally). The OP came off like they were here to just drum up business. BTW, the place is nearly empty at this point in time.

Tis so free

From: Matty Luminos How is this "Free gallery space"? I went to look and the rentals are L$275 a week. The information provided by the owner of Omni Market and Art Gallery specifically states that artists are to ignore the rental box and just set themselves up. This information is clearly outlined in the area where artists select their gallery location. The artists then email the owner with specific details. Which, by the way, is exactly what i did - free, no L's changed hands, none was asked or expected of me. I am more than grateful and quite disheartened at the responses to this post. Is there not one person out there who sees (as I do) the value of this initiative? Sigh ...

you should move the slurl so they land in the information center and not in your store on the other side of the mall.. i looked around and gave up on trying to find this message you are talking about now..but then again you didn't mention that till now.. i saw a tour hud but didn't see much of anything where anything said just setup or ignore anything..
