I've just seen a group that has a title just like a popular group except that one word is changed from plural to singular.
The counterfeit group's charter is an exact copy and paste from the real group - they didn't even bother to change the plural to singular in the charter.
The real group is invitation only, the counterfeit has a 99,999 linden join fee.
I don't want to mention the group but folks might want to take a look and see if any groups you are in and care about have counterfeit groups trying for a join fee ripoff or that are trying other underhanded stuff.

Folks don't read what they click on in a prudent manner, especially on Saturday night after a fourth to a third of a bottle of vodka.

that should be a general rule
12-28-2008 05:23
it should be a general rule not to get drunk when going into an environment that deals with money such as SL or Las Vegas even. I have lived in Las Vegas for a few years and alcohol is one of the various tactics to get people to slip up and over spend. same with here it is no different. there are constant transactions taking place from the microlevels of personal shopping to the macrolevels of large land dealings between interested parties. Alcohol has no place in such environments because of the lack of judgement factor.
respectfully,
Phi

From: Key MacMoragh Are there many ppl with that much money in their virtual pocket? YES You forget that regions cost 100-300 USD per month and DUMB people maintain multiple of these. You forget that this is the internet and that sl is for porn (since it failed on a professional commercial sector long ago) and people pay a lot for some kind of online porn in sl.

From: Key MacMoragh Are there many ppl with that much money in their virtual pocket? It only takes one to net you a tidy sum with minimal investment.

Hehe you must not get out much but I disagree. I make my living building and developing commercial sims for real life companies. Not all are out trying to sell products and some are even creating places so people can get support or learn how to use software.

I wouldn't join any group that charges for membership. I would argue that if you must charge your potential customers to join a group for the privilege of being advertised to, then you do not have a very good business plan.

LOL dumb people maintain multiple regions?? sounds like they are doing pretty well at it if they are owning multiple.. as for the porn part..watch less news and travel more in SL..there is a whole other world in there that many never get to see because they get stuck at the bus stop they were dropped off at.

I have lost all sympathy for the stupid people of the world that do not bother to read what they are clicking or signing. I have, at times, accidently purchased something that cost more than I thought because I just did not read the L$ amount very clearly - and it is nobody's fault but mine. Even is someone sticks a L$500 item in the middle of a bunch of freebies (which quite a few actually do), it is still my fault when I actually buy it because I am in too big of a hurry to closely watch the boxes that I am clicking.

I'd think such a group might be disbanded by the owner when it someone who misplaced thekir reading glasses clicks the blurry button.
Then the real "Example Charity Group" owner gets a complaint from someone about why the group took 99999 from them a few days ago, and tells them "oh, it was a counterfeit group".
"What group, there is no such group" says the victim, and there is no such group because the group was closed and all members ejected the minute the mouse triggered the trap.

Seeing all this big monies talk makes me doubt my creativity. Even with a store and a teaching job inworld, the idea of seeing anything near L$10k is a pipe dream I'm afraid I'll never see. (>_< If someone has the ability to make L$99,999 inworld ... I'm sure they're smart enough to not join. =^-^=

Just because the group I saw used 99999 as the join fee doesn't mean all fake groups using this trickery would using the biggest number a fee can be set to; some or most con men might figure that a smaller amount would be more likely to go unnoticed.

I don't see how it would be a violation of the TOS to mention the name of the legitimate group - absolutely correctly spelled, of course - if you're not advertising it or criticizing it. Interested parties could then act accordingly. ; )

Besides, I wouldn't want someone to investigate it and click the join button by mistake.
