Why does Chiron sim lag so very badly?

Not far from my SL home there is a region called Chiron. When you enter Chiron from any of the adjacent regions, it is like you have suddenly walked into an invisible force field - it seems like you are walking through treacle!

Is there anyone with a high performance machine that could visit Chiron and determine exactly what is causing this? I'm beginning to wonder whether it's deliberate or just ignorance. When I have the statistics open, the drop in script performance is noticeable, but other figures don't seem much different from neighbouring sims.

A very telling thing are the time statistics. You have to click the Time thinger at the bottom of the statistics bar to see them. There's a KB article that describes which each statistic means. The most evil one is Physics Time. When that number goes up, the sim will start stealing resources away from other things like scripts in order to keep up with all the calculations.

Oh my god, I'm standing there right now and I have NEVER seen script time this high before. There's an enormous script load in this sim- so much that I wonder if it's being griefed. The Other Time is also rather high, and that is the "mystery stat." It's not explained very well at all in the KB and I don't know anyone who understands it. But- the reason this sim is in trouble are the scripts... they are killing overall sim performance to an extent I've never seen elsewhere.

Unfortunately it is a mainland sim, and there are likely many owners- and none of them have access to the region tools that aid in tracking down bad scripts.

The "Fun House" a bit northeast of the center of the sim seems to be rezzing then deleting about six 175-prim objects every few seconds. That's a pretty evil thing to do to an old class 4 mainland sim...

The other really unfortunate thing about situations like this is that LL gives us no way to track the number of scripts in a parcel, or in an object. We can see prims that way but not scripts. We can only see the total number of scripts in the sim, even if it's a private estate that you own.

He's right! They DON'T lag... it's what you rez WITH them that lags. That's like the full contents of seven 512m lots rerezzing every few seconds. Who knows.. it could be intentional, instead of ignorance.

Wildfire, can you check Phantasm too? A neighbor there uses the temp rez on all her stuff. And lag is awful there. I thought for awhile it was my waterfalls, but if its temp rez stuff....she likes it cause it saves her prims. She sold a 512 with over 250 prim temp rez objects. Nice to have that many prims on a small plot, but not if it causes so much lag you cant enjoy it.

The Chiron sim must have been cleaned up. I'm at that "fun house" now, and I don't see any thing that looks temp rezzed. I also don't see anything that I would describe as "fun" either, but maybe that's just me.

Total frame time now is under 12ms. I have no idea what it was earlier, but the scripts and everything here seems to be running great.

Support ticket it with the sim stats. LL in world team will clean it up asap. They will return the laggy scripted things to the owner and follow up with a message about what they did.

They are an awesome team.

There doesn't appear to be much happening in the Fun House (at least not in the 'fun' category that is), however did anyone notice the HUGE skybox (sky megalith) directly above it. I took a look inside (you can drop in from above), the owner obviously likes trees, and lots of falling snow. Actually this is worth a visit, it's like being in the Alps..pretty good really.
It's big but I'm not so sure it's such a drag on the lag (which oddly had eased off since I've been in the place, how wierd!)

There's little jawa guys on the roof of it. Maybe 6 circles of 5-6 of them each. Each circle is a single link set that I could see being deleted then re-rezzed every few seconds.

Though many come to the forums to find out how to turn off Show Updates, it makes finding things like this a lot easier..

At least the big pictures of Hammy the Squirrel put a smile on my face. I love Hammy. Other than that I'd have to agree. I didn't see much fun there at all.

@ Argos, when I was in Chiron, frame time was between 40ms and 70ms, sim FPS was in the single digits. If you're seeing 12ms frame times there something drastic has changed.

@ Shayla, I'm in Phantasm now and it's looking very healthy. Perfect sim FPS and dilation, relatively low script time, although I do see occasional spikes to 15ms script time (still manageable), so there might be a couple of spazzy scripted things in the sim... overall things are looking quite good though.

The jawa guys were still on the roof when I was there, and the sim was running fine. I didn't see them blinking in and out, but if there was something else lagging the sim earlier, I guess they would have been.

When I went to look at Phantasm, I didn't see anything wrong there either, but Shayla's land borders the Third Space sim which is definately lagging. Maybe being a child agent of the Third Space sim would cause her some problems.

The following are the different statistics in the Simulator section of the statistics pane (accessed via Ctrl-shift-1 or the Client menu):

i could probably find the answer to this question in the KB, but i thought id ask you.
i use updates often but im not sure on the different colors, am i correct that red is scripted physical objects, green is physical objects, but ive seen blue and yellow, not sure what those are, did i forget (lol) ?
i use the updates in addtition to beacons and transparency often as an aiding tool in locating and identifying certain objects.

Certainly no fun at all if you can't even move around because of the lag!

I just TP'd there and I could actually move now - and I'm running a very low spec kit. So maybe someone read this thread and did something?

@ Argos - I could see the little ghost figures rezing in and out - my low spec machine again, no doubt.

I have been struggling with 1 to 5 in fps in Huin for a while here. Hwang I get 7. Nakji my home sim bit better.
Only one day it got up to 10 though in Huin but Hwang I only get over 10 if I am up at 500m.
Yet others who visit seem to be doing bit better computer, fps wise then me.
I think its my computer also the amount of prims.
By the way for those of us who don't know how do you go about testing for bad scripts?

There seems to be far fewer jawa guys there now. There was a bunch of rings of them when I first looked, now there's only 2 rings.

I think the creator of them has different versions. On one ring there now, it just seems to be a simple target omega that's not generating updates. On the other one, each jawa in the ring seems to be doing lots of position/rotation updates per second.

The ones I saw originally were definitely getting deleted then re-rezzed every 5-6 seconds, but I have no idea if that was by design - could be that the script had lost its brain or that the sim was low on temp prim space and deleting them quickly. Dunno.

That sounds more like Beacons than Show Updates.

Show updates tells you how often the sim is updating an object. Blue means a (fairly cheap) update to the object position and rotation, red means a (more expensive) full object update and green means an object deleted. An object being created will, of course, be a full update.

For the jawas on chiron, the ones I said are just a simple target omega aren't showing any updates at all - they're just moving in a circle, minding their own business. For the ones I said are generating lots of updates, you can see a steady stream of blue coming out of each one.

For the ones I saw yesterday getting deleted/rezzed, there would be a puff of green as the circle got deleted then a big puff of red as it got re-rezzed. This was followed by a stream of blue from each one for a few seconds before the circle got deleted (then red as they got created again, etc, etc).

Not always because of your PC. If you are closer to the object than your draw distance, seeing them come/go is probably because they have a script in them that's making them do that..

You're mixing FPSs.. The sim itself tries to generate 45 snapshots every second of how things are on the sim. This is "Sim FPS" and impacts everybody on the sim - if the sim is only doing a few of these snapshots every second, _everybody_ on that sim is going to be laggy, regardless of what kind of PC they have. Even a Linden with some kick-butt PC, sitting in the colo, plugged directly into the router, with all the settings turned down.

Just plain old FPS is how fast your PC is drawing the world around you. If the number you're looking at changes based on what height you're at, you're looking at FPS, not Sim FPS.
