"Stories of adult activity in the Second Life virtual world abound, and now SL has promised to start using ID-verification technology to limit access to "restricted" areas. It's going as far as asking for the last four digits of someone's Social Security number. Sounds heavy, but I expect that many, many minors will simply lie."

I expect so as well, but th existence of the "system" will still help LL defend itself against corruption of minor type claims, and also pas the buck onto us, the end-users, to restrict content.

Well I think that statement has been well and truly proven to be a load of baloney!

What? That people use payment status as an age verification? Or that people think it works?

ETA:

"Credit cards will not be accepted as a means of identity because they are not restricted to people over 18, are not tied to a verified name..."

Credit cards aren't tied to a verified name? Since when?

BTW LL's statement that info you provide wont be kept on file is just plain wrong, take a look at the third party web site. They keep every scrap of info and use it in the database for all their merchant customers.

Wouldn't it just be easier to for LL to promote SL cyb0rs3cks as the latest trend in modern sex-education rather than attempting to control it? Hey, they could even come out smelling of roses.

Thought Police? The Thought Police would be trying to keep little Johnny and Little Trisha from thinking about sex, not trying to keep them from watching pixel sex in SL. Though they would stop them from thinking about watching pixel sex in SL.
