Missing Inventory Item

Hi everyone,

I recently "lost" an inventory item (a HUD). The HUD was displayed. I clicked on it, and chose Detach. I went into my inventory, but cannot find it. At some point, I dragged another item to the floor, but maybe I dragged the HUD In error. Regardless, I cannot find the HUD on the floor, under the floor, on my avie, or displayed. I've been a long time SL resident, and usually can resolve this dilemma eventually. I logged out and back in again, but the HUD still did not reappear in my inventory. Any thoughts or ideas? It cost about $6.00, so I hope to get it back. Thanks!

Another place to look is 0,0,0 on the sim you were on.

But the missing HUD thing is an old and unforgiving problem. I am sure several people here can sympathize and like me, have lost tens of thousands of L$ to the bug. You might try opening a support ticket, sometimes the Lindens can shake out a few lost items from the asset servers.

If you live on a private region you could have the sim owner or estate manager locate it for you. They can find it from the debug settings.

Other wise, Rhonda Huntress has a good idea. More then likely you will find it one day when all of your objects get returned - Lord knows that has happened to me more then once.

This may be http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-6110 -- which was supposed to be fixed in Server 1.30 but, it seems from some of the recent comments, may not have been.

Thank you.

I went to 0,0,0 as Rhonda Temptress suggested, and found a pile of stuff all squished together. I didn't see/find my Huddle, unfortunately. This suggestion was completely new to me.

I also requested assitance from my estate manager, as Dion Hallard suggested. Hopefully, she will come up with something.

And I followed the link from Innual Zenakar; no luck unfortunately, but thanks.

I have been on SL for more than 2 1/2 years, and this is the first time I've been hit by such a bad inventory loss. Working with dances/song/music is my primary reason for being here, and as you know it takes money, time, and effort to "do it right," so losing this stuff just about makes me want to quit. (I lost several non-copy dances with the Huddle.)

But not just yet. I'll wait for my estate manager and explore other avenues as suggested or discovered.

Thanks again to everyone.

You never indicated if you wore the HUD while it was rezzed in-world the last time you put it on or picked "Wear" in inventory?

If the last time you wore was while it was rezzed in-world then you can open a support ticket and they'll be able to drop it back into your inventory. It's still there in that case, it's just "orphaned".

(Ironically the reason why we no longer can move no copy/no transfer items in/out of attachments was to close down a exploit. LL should have fixed it properly and left us that feature rather than always doing half work and leaving us with having to rez attachments which is far too prone to loss)

Another possibility is that the HUD is inside the floor's inventory, that kind of thing can happen if the building or furniture are modifiable by you, and you happen to have you finger on the ctrl key when dragging. So, you may want to open or edit the house etc. to see what might have fallen into their contents.

Without knowing the exact circumstances, as Kitty suggests, it's difficult to suggest possible diagnoses. For example, I've often wanted to attach my Huddle, thought, "oh no, it's gone," but then been able to recover it by logging out, deleting my cache manually from wherever it's hiding on my pc (far more effective than doing it from Edit-Preferences) and relogging.

This forces your inventory to reload from the server rather than your cache, and you'd be surprised -- if you haven't done it before -- what reappears.

I think what happens is that, if you've got a large inventory and the sim and your connection are running slowly, the operation of loading your inventory from cache times out after a while, with only part of your inventory loaded. The problem is that, if this happens, your viewer assumes that your inventory now comprises the new, lower, number of items and only loads that the next time you log on, so if your Huddle was part of the 5% of items that didn't load the first time, that's the last you've seen of it till you delete the cache folder and force the viewer to see what the inventory server thinks you own rather than what it thinks is in its (possibly corrupted) local cache.

I run Windows and Linux on the same machine, and only really realised the implications of local cache problems when I found that almost half my inventory was missing when I logged in on Windows but still there, and available for use, if I logged in using Linux.

Certainly worth a try if you haven't done it.

Or whatever you were around at the time, I found a complete bathroom hidden in my house when I moved it. I thought i had lost it for sure months ago. Worth a shot!

Can anyone find that thread about someone who lost their xcite (or sensations or whatever) genitals in the floor? That was one of the funniest things I've seen here for some time.
