There's another Robin, and she's in charge of SL's website:
http://lindenlab.com/pressroom/releases/31_08_09

Soooo.... five'll get you ten that these forums will persist in exactly this form for QUITE a while, while new Robin redirects the hell out of everybody in Web dev at LL in a frantic attempt to invent new revenue streams.

What do YOU think this will mean for us, for residents in general, and of course for world peace?

Oh, wow.. we're back to zero now aren't we?

All these features in the works... you know, I wish for once LL would ASK us what we really want. And listen to it. And develop it. But somewhere along the way LL gets stuck at asking us what we want... and loops.

I'd like to wish the new Linden a lot of luck, and if I was her, the first thing I'd do is kill the new look on the website and take the actual good ideas from it and integrate into something that will work on a far wider band of systems. Including smart phones.. because some brands don't do Flash.

Plus, I'd have OpenID actually do it's job. No more logging in four different times to just to access different parts of the Second Life. Just once and you have access to all the sections.

I'd fix these forums and tell them to shove the blog-software-that-wants-to-be-a-forum. There is nothing wrong with this forum type. It's solid and reliable... which might be why LL wants to do away with it. Don't want the residents getting used to the idea of reliable, working, software.

Now how this will actually affect us? I think it's kinda like the Titanic movie... you know how it's gonna end, but you stick around to see how many people actually jump ship...

If this meant something like AjaxLife.net, I'd be interested.

But it probably just means more stuff like listing the groups I belong to.

One thing for sure... if she was in charge of Adobes web front, you can be sure she knows WTF she's doing. Not saying the tao won't corrupt her though, it's been known to twist quite a few accomplished individuals into yes men/women.

Yeah, but the positions listed are all management, not technical. Budget will be the primary concern. This means fewer hours clocked on the web design team's charge code, reduced footprint and technologies (fewer programs to license and update) and finally, consolidation of redundancy -- namely the forums.

My predictions for 12 months.
On the low end: Robin will do for their web presence like Katt did for communications. The site will be for ordering SLeek, Avphone (or whatever the frack it is called) and any other tidbits LL can charge for. These forums go away. SLX forums reduced.

On the high end: The SLX and official forums are merged and the software updated. One new toy is discussed and hyped but nothing happens with it.

Most likely out come: some stuff gets shuffled around on pages no one uses nothing else really happens.

Oh no disagreement there. Just seems that the higher they are on the ladder the *more* it seems that following suit and not sticking out is the rule, not the other way around that is normally seen. They're backwards lol.
Your predictions I think are right on as well, although I'd love to see them realize that sometimes the benefits of licencing certain things outweigh the costs.. ie- REAL forums :p

If they said something like Robin was bringing with her several key members of her team than I would get excited. Then things like saying they want to help bring SL and RL together would be web tools to search for almost anything. IM from web to world. Import files from the web site to your SL avatar. Join and leave groups as well as manage permissions for your groups. In other words, bringing SL into the real world, not vice versa.

Ah, well. They did not hire me nor do they care about the direction I would like to go. What will be, will be.

Specifically, Ducot will work to expand the company's Web infrastructure and architecture, offering complementary lightweight Web experiences that extend the value of Second Life beyond the virtual world and help Residents more closely integrate Second Life with their daily lives.
.................
"Linden Lab's core mission from inception has been to harness the power of immersive 3D environments to improve the way people communicate, create and collaborate. The Web plays an absolutely vital and complementary role in this mission and in the overall Second Life experience, offering new ways to connect with and benefit from the virtual world,"

I see it as SL focussing on the extensionists, with the immersionists being a sort of embarrassing underground movement.

Since new I like to let die LL announcements in myself, as soon I receive them. So, this one is another good feeding of my inner graveyard.
