I asked here a while ago how to find an object (a cage) that I had rezzed, left, and which had then gone missing. I've not been able to find it.

Someone suggested 'scanning' for it.

How do I do that ?

There are several tools that let you scan an area by basic criteria to try to locate an object. I use http://xstreetsl.com/modules.php?name=Marketplace&file=item&ItemID=1069525 for it. It lets you enter the partial name of the object and will notify you when it is nearby, and it's super-cheap. Maybe someone else knows of a completely free version.

If you happen to have a MystiTool (seems everybody does), it has some kind of object scanner script built in (which I've never used). I hacked a quick-and-dirty script for an ad hoc hunting expedition a while back, and use that sometimes, but it's too kludgy even to give away; I only mention it because if you're into scripting at all, a manually-positioned scanner attachment is an easy application of llSensorRepeat(). (If I could get in-world, I'd love to help with the hunt, but it's not an option today.)

I use the one that Rika Watanabe created. I don't remember the cost, but it has a lot of other features that are useful for various types of treasure hunts also.

Her store is called Clever Things, if you want to go look at it.

Scan-Foo is an excellent tool for that. Not very expensive either, as I recall. Can do things like scanning only for things owned by a specific person, scanning by partial object name (like "name contains 'cage'.";), or scanning only for scripted things belonging to others... Very versitile.

If it is a scripted item, an Estate Manager or Sim Owner can determine if it is in-world in their estate, using the Estate mamangement tools and the top scripts list. They can return it to it's owner, sight-unseen, from that list, too.
