The bottom-right corner of my minimap has a sort of orange triangle, that I can use to drag the map bigger and smaller - maybe yours got squished somehow. If your minimap is at a right-hand side of your screen, drag teh whole map to the left a bit (you need room on the right to expand it) then grab that little orange triangle and drag - theminipap should get bigger.

This sounds similar to a problem I recently had with the notecard editor. I would open it up and its window was messed up. I couldn't see anything but the titlebar. I figured the bits for setting the window size were still present but were invisible. So I just repeatedly guessed at where the window sizing gadget might be and kept pressing the mouse button and dragging my mouse outwards. I eventually guessed right.
So yeah, the sizing thing is probably still there but you'll just have to guess where.
See, Second Life is a game after all.

Make our SL window larger and you should be able to see more of the mini-map, to where you can grab the menu bar at the top or get the bottom right corner.

If you right click on the mini-map you can choose from 3 different zooms. Hope this helps

I am now having this problem, but when i right click or try to do anything with the transparent sliver of the map that is showing, it gives me the edit screen for an item behind the map in world. It acts like the mini map isnt there at all. I do have the direction letters, the plus sign and the little expander lines. But when I click on them, none of them work...any suggestions?
Thanks!

You could delete the settings.xml file for the viewer you are using. This would be C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\SecondLife\user_settings\settingls.xml for the mainstream SL viewer. If you feeling adventurous you could edit the file in a text editor. There should be some lines like this: From: someone <key>FloaterMiniMapRect <map> <key>Comment <string>Rectangle for world map <key>Type <string>Rect <key>Value <array> <integer>824 <integer>681 <integer>1024 <integer>456 </array> </map> You could delete that entire section, which I think would cause SL to use default values, or you could change the four numbers after four <integer>'s to the values in the example above. You might have to set Windows Explorer to show hidden files and folders and system folders to find this folder. That's done in Explorer with Tools / Folder Options / View and set the radio button that says Show hidden files and folders. Best to uncheck the checkbox that says Hide extenstions for known file types. It might be simpler to just delete the settings.xml file. If you are using the release candidate the filename is settings_releasecandidate.xml . If you delete the file you will get asked all the new user questions and lose the custom settings you had set up, so you'd have to do them over again. There might be some less annoying sneaky fix that I don't know about. Possibly changing your screen resolution to a real high value , say, instead of 1024 x 768, to use my normal resolution as an example , I might set the screen resolution to 1280 x 1024, start SL, make sure that SL is using the higher resolution, and see if that lets you move and resize your minimap.

OK - short version of this fix (that has worked for me). Still no idea why this happened. It was after login and a few people suffer it. In XP enable hidden files and folders.
C:\Documents and Settings\>insert your user PC username< \Application Data\SecondLife
Inside I had the following folders: Browser_profile. Cache >Sl username here< Logs User_settings
OK - Log out of SL
I created a new folder called "map issue backup" - doesnt matter I guess - I prefer to not delete in case things go bad. Move all the folders into this new folder EXCEPT Browser profile. If something goes wrong (and it shouldnt) you can return to your previous state.
With only the browser profile folder left log back into SL
By doing this the viewer has to recreate the files - this means your map issue is fixed - the downside is you need to reset your graphics settings and otehr personal changes (stop typing noise etc) but this only takes a few minutes and worth the effort to have the map back.
OK - hope this helps - it was driving me nuts but I'm good now. Still no explanation of why it happened sadly.

Very Easy Fix
05-17-2008 16:27
I found a very easy fix.
While in SL, go to File, then to Set Window Size...choose the smallest size there, then go back to your larger size. The screen stayed small so i had to take the corner and drag it out to full size, but magically the mini map was restored.
Thanks for all the recommendations, but im too chicken to go in an alter program files when i dont know what im doing. Also, im a pretty savvy user and things like dragging the corner of the mini map and all of the obvious things to do did not work in this instance as a resolution.
Happy Mapping!

My viewer just did it again and sadly this didnt work for me (wish it did though). I've just canned my pay account with SL - they're not interested and unhelpfull with many issues (including the woefull assett server performance, the memory leaks, now this). Untill this changes I wont be giving them my lindens. Now to recreate the files again *sighs*
