OK, so I dealt with my first griefers the other day and realised that I need to get a little better at it...
I have the rights to freeze/eject/ban on the island where I work, and I can deal with that pretty well, I think. I also know how to then go into the Region info, and return all the prims that belong to the griefers to get rid of any "stuff" they may have left behind (we have auto-return on, so it's only a matter of time, anyway - this just speeds it up). They were then ARed by the person that they were picking on.
So I have a specific and general question. First, the griefers in this case were in flying vehicles. I couldn't find an easy way to freeze them while they were in the vehicle, because I couldn't right-click on them to get the pie-menu up. So I "return"ed their vehicles to them, and then locked them down and kicked them out. Is there a better, quicker way of doing that?
Second, in general, can anyone give me good tips on what I need to watch out for so I can get better at doing this?

Sounds like you came up with a good solution for the fast-moving vehicle situation. Good quick thinking. Mystitool has a land powers interface that drops down a blue menu listing efverybody bannable, which would save you a step. On the other hand, returning their vehicle and locking them down as you did should add extra disincentive for them.
You might want to invest in a good orbiter as well. One that has a drop-down blue menu showing the targets in its range. Mystitool has one, though you personally need to be push-enabled on your island to use it. I think others use a different technology that is basically non-push, but they are expensive and you would need to research them. Depends on your situation - if they are able to stand just outside your ban area and shout or otherwise chat-spam or or emit particles onto your area, it would be a helpful addition.
In general, land powers plus ARs (the more the better, so you should AR too and get as many others to join as possible) seem to be the best all around anti-griefing tools when available.

Others here have said that orbiting anyone opens you up to being AR'ed regardless of whether it's on your own land or not, so I don't know how quick I'd be to use that as part of a defense strategy.

Yeah, I'm a bit loathe to use griefing objects on griefers, if there is just as effective a way to deal with them using standard tools.
Thanks for the advice (and any that is still coming... )

In sandboxes I name and shame griefers by shouting what they're doing in chat, along with their name in block capitals.

The Mystitool is a nice gadget to have. It is relatively inexpensive and has some neat tools on it.

I need to find a friend whom I can practice "freezing" upon on my land. It should be fun.

Cyn, I did the same as you - but a tip - get someone to freeze YOU, as well as freezing them. Then you can really find out what you can and can't do.
