Occasionally I run into a blue-box message at certain locations, saying "Currency converter hud, a new version is available. Update? Y/N". The item is always owned by someone different.

I always pick No because I don't own a currency converter hud and I sure don't want an upgrade of something I don't have.

But does anyone know whether this is legit, or some kind of a scam?

Scam, make sure you don't already have something attached that's generating this, it could be draining your L$.

Nothing attached,. and it only happens when visiting certain locations, as though I'm coming into range of a static object. In the most recent case the owner of the object matched the owner of the store I was in.

I think next time I find one I'm going to accept it and wear it to see what it actually does, and then I'll have something to AR.

I think all these scare stories about things that mysteriously steal your Lindens without warning are a myth. Nothing can steal your Lindens without first popping up a giant orange box saying "THIS THING IS GONNA TAKE YOUR MONEY!" All you need to do is click "NO".

I wouldn't recommend attaching it, there are a lot of things that can be done with lsl that you might not like or notice.

so, nothing something rezzed on ground, or even attached to another person can't do? I can't think of anything bad that couldn't be undone by simply detaching the object or relogging after detaching it, specially if you already know the object might be spying on you or somthing
