Honestly I almost question its validity as an SL screenshot, besides the wonky background. Obligatory question: What kind of stuff is in the other startup shots, or what's your favorite one?

Normally I don't see the startup screenshots because I log in too fast, or (more often) they don't load. Today though, I got the one of the moon rising over a city, and noticed something a little off about it.

I would say it is in SL and the moon is just another prim object that they goofed up on the placement or just did not worry about it
reminds me of starry nights, I liked that build _____________________

Not 100% sure but it looks like Windlight settings with a prim moon.
There are some very interesting effects you can do with Windlight. _____________________

Oh I'm sure it's in SL, why would they put it on the startup page if it weren't? I just don't think it's that great a shot. I'm guessing that the distant buildings and the moon are both alpha textures on very large, hollow megaprim spheres, and the angle was badly chosen so they're able to overlap. I would expect the photographers that took these pictures to at least be more observant and skilled, especially if they're Lindens.
On the plus side, the building effects are pretty cool. It has a feeling of "hugeness" that's hard to achieve in SL. |

I think the screens should have more images of people, and I think the ones that have people now --with the exception of the ballroom dance one -- are very poor examples of how to show avatars in SL. Show me good social interaction. Avatars stuck in a dance animation or sitting at a picnic table don't cut it. _____________________

It's hard to get a city to actually feel like a city, so I'd like to see this one. The Flickr streams gave me a few other places to stop too! Ditto on the more people comment. And for crying out loud, show more non-humans, especially non-anthros! LL and the media have a bad habit of making SL look like just another 3D chat with Barbie dolls. Sure there's nothing wrong with virtual Barbies, but SL has so much more, and there are people who don't have a single human avatar in their inventory. I'd like the splash screens more if they had more robots, aliens, and animals. ![]() Just an FYI to everyone saying the original shot is using Windlight...Yes, obviously. I always use Windlight. ![]() |

It has a whole section that is about SL subcultures -- furries, tinies, ferals, merfolk, SL kids, nekos, etc. Was nice to see actual recognition for these groups, especially in a book geared towards businesses and educators. An ya, I'm biased: I'm quoted in that section, discussing SL Kids. [/THREADJACK] _____________________

Question: Where is LL finding those pix? Do they take the pix themselves, or are they found on an SL flickr group? Is there a way to submit a photo, hoping it will be chosen? Or is there a flickr group to join and post photos onto?
Thanks. |

Some might argue that was a redundant sentence. ![]() _____________________
