According to this Massively story: http://www.massively.com/2008/11/07/linden-lab-layoffs/

This weekend four Linden Research employees were let go...

Of future interest though, from their response to Massively about it:
From: someone
...increasing our investment in core strategic initiatives related to platform stability, usability and several new product areas. As we've refocused on these core initiatives...
Anyone have any ideas?

i said only last week they may be cutting back even with these increases..
LL is feeling the pinch just like everyone is in the country..

I think they just got through with their quarterly reviews, so perhaps "layoff" is a euphemism.

4 people compared to the expansion of the past year is really not a big story. Now if the population of SL could vote on which 4, then we'd have a story worth talking about!

It's 6 less than Valleywag said. They've been signing deals with third party companies, there has probably been a redundancy in some roles due to that.

Well as I said in another post LL are hurting.IMHO. It would be strange if they were not.The world economy is crap,it's been getting this way for a while. Why should SL be different from anywhere else?...I just lowered a good mates hours in RL,why? I needed too.sorry.

Second Life is no different from any other business out there, also they are up against real and up and coming, competition. I have checked most out and they really can't hold a candle to the real deal, and of course that's here.I hope they sweat it out and keep going for all our sakes. Don't you? They might have to downsize a bit but I am afraid that's the way of the world at this time.

Possibly the Big SpaceShip deal had something to do with it. That outfit maybe doing what those laid off where doing. 300 people for SL seems like a lot of people. What the heck are they all doing?

Though 4 out of 300 is not much, the "layoffs" just may spur some of the remaining to get out of that cozy cubicle and actually do something constructive for the betterment of the platform they are all so proud of.

Geeze, someone just might have to do something they really don't want to do..........just like I have to do every freaking day of the work week.

Psst Peggy, they laid off the only 4 who actually did anything. They were making the others look bad.

yep

i drive an hour, to spend 8 hours doing crap i really don't wanna do, just to drive an hour back and do it again the next day

but in the last 3 workdays ive gotten 4 emails and a voice mail complementing our department (the other guy and i), which makes you feel a little bit more pride in your job

where as linden labs has the opposite situation, the TAO lets them do what they want, and pretty much whenever they want and for their (cough) efforts they get constant backlash and badmouthing

maybe i need to send them the banner we have up in the office

"you make customer happy" (i work for a Korean based company)

they have long forgotten that simple malformed phrase

I see that LL has recently hired

Tom Hale, formerly Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Knowledge Worker Business Unit at Adobe Systems, as LL's "Chief Product Officer",

Clare Rees, formerly a Senior Group Manager at Adobe, as LL's "European Marketing Director",

Scott Sechser, former Operations Manager at the White House, as LL's "Government Accounts Manager",

Adam Blondin, formerly Event Producer at The Electric Sheep Company, as Jr. Community Manager,

Frank Ambrose, formerly at Knight Point Systems, as "SVP Global Technology",

Beth Gray, formerly Paid Search Sr. Account Manager at shopping.com, as "Director of Business Analysis / Financial Planning" ( why can't they use an ampersand instead of a slash?),

Amanda Van Nuys, formerly Vice President, Corporate Marketing at Organic, as "Director, Enterprise Marketing",

and I seem to recall reading about a big hire in progress, of 50 or 100 people, my memory is not clear on this matter.
