I have created an account and assigned an Avatar name.

I have downloaded the linux version of the software. How do I launch the program? There does not seem to be any instructions on that.

I have a launch_url.sh file the only binary is named "do not run me" or some such thing.

So how do I actually get "IN-World"?

you might try posting in the technical talk section.........or the Linux section. I would think the Linux section would be better though. Most people here and in the technical talk section are Windows users with a few Mac users.

Your chances for help are much better in one of those two sections.

Oh, and don't forget the obligitory sacrifices and prayers to St Ruth that it actually works.

I found this in the Linux subforum:

/263/e3/260995/1.html

That seems to tell how to start the application. I know nothing about Linux, so I am hoping that helps. :)

3. INSTALLING & RUNNING
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

The Second Life Linux client entirely runs out of the directory you have
unpacked it into - no installation step is required.

Run ./secondlife from the installation directory to start Second Life.
not the most intuitive instructions especially if you are new to Linux. You want to start a Terminal window and then use cd to get to the directory where you unzipped everything. When you are in the correct directory type ./secondlife and hit enter.

There are other ways of doing it too. If you open up the folder where you unzipped everything, there should be one file simply called "secondlife". Right click on it and choose properties. Depending on if you have Ubuntu/Sabayon/etc it's all slightly different, but you want to look for a "permissions" tab. There should be a checkbox that says "is executable?". Make sure that box is checked. If so then you can just double click the "secondlife" script and it should run. You will not see all of the information displayed using the first method above tho, and it may seem to hang for a second or two before the SL window pops up.

If the script is set "executable" you can also make shortcuts to it to put anywhere you want, like say the desktop.

Lemme know if I missed any details. I'm doing this from memory as my Linux box is in pieces. :(

Thanks. That seemed to help but apparently I either have the wrong video card or driver.
